Re: New/Rented Movies: Have Mercy on Michael Bay's Soul, He Knows Not What He Does

Hunger Games was OK -- Nicholas Sparks does Running Man. The lead character is a Mary Sue, but the actress was so compelling it doesn't matter. B for the movie, A for the actress.

My wife (who loves the books) said it was a fairly faithful adaptation, but that they missed an opportunity to do interesting stuff with the "behind the scenes" scenes. The political-social critique to the present is obvious but they didn't actually overtly state it, which was refreshing.

    Spoiler in white below:

I have no idea whether this was faithful to the book, but I didn't buy any romantic interest from the girl 12 for the boy 12. He loves her, she's using him (though not in a malicious way) to get back to her family and smoldering Huntsman. I respected her for this, but if the character is actually being set up to be torn in a cliche three-way love triangle later in the franchise, then there's nothing to suggest that yet. Dude, you're a nice guy, but she's just not into you.

Every black character in the movie solely exists to enable and extend the white girl -- it was like a 40's movie. The designer is the Magic Negro with sage advice. The doomed girl is the substitute for the sister. The "one time" savior dies immediately after doing his bit. The black district riots and gets dutifully put down to add some background cred for the injustice of their fate. I don't usually notice "soft racism," but that was really, really egregious.

      Hockey Flick! --> Goon

Looks like this one is being released to theaters on March 30, but available “On Demand” now. Checked my Time Warner “On Demand” menu, and sure enough... Goon is listed (in HD) at $9.99 for 48hrs.

Has anyone watch Goon yet? Looks interesting... I may just have to check it out this weekend, but I have a strong feeling I am going to have suppress any pre-conceived negative opinions that may exist resulting from obvious comparisons to Slapshot.

It's showing at one of the local "arthouse" type theaters here in Minneapolis (Lagoon, I think?). I'll wait for rental.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

I posted the trailer a while back. I dont have the on-demand but I do plan on seeing it eventually. Not sure if it will be rental or if I will see in theaters.

Looked at the coming soon lists on imdb today. Only really seeing 2 movies that I want to see in theaters. Prometheus and Dark Knight Rises. It seems like every year there are less movies I get excited for.

as of today it's got a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes .com. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/goon/

FWIW, the character's races aren't really mentioned in the novel, at least from what I remember (granted, I tend to skip over the long descriptive exposes), and the scene from district 11 was a distinct change from the novel. To the extent you think there was soft racism, I think you're reading too much into it. There are only about 5 likeable characters in the book, and african americans make up 2 of the 5 in the movie (Rue and Cinna). I suppose they could've tried to get Samuel L Jackson in lieu of Woody Harrelson, but I thought Woody did a **** fine job (and, combined with Zombieland, has risen from the dead of late); the only other person I could see in that role is Bruce Willis.

And you know **** well if they had made one of the 3-4 villains a minority, they'd be accused of hard racism (and, frankly, Donald Sutherland, the intern from Bones who plays the Big Bad, and the gamemaster were all pretty well cast, so that leaves maybe one other opportunity for an African-American villain in the form of the girl who likes knives, and since she's partners with the Big Bad, I have no problem with them not doing so).

Woody Harrelson has been surprisingly good in what he's done lately. I thought he was good in his small role in No Country for Old Men also.

This. I think he's pulled out of the spiral. Good on him.

He was very good in Game Change.

I'm sure I am. It's not a matter of villainy or likeability, but that the characters are there as cardboard cutouts to get the heroine through a difficult time, or provide a needed plot twist, and then they vaporize. I'll retract "soft racism," since it has other unfortunate baggage I didn't mean, and just say the screenplay's focus on the one girl to the exclusion of everything else underlined the problem (or virtue) of a Power Girl flick where everything revolves around the wish projection of the adolescent audience.

According to The Wife, this is mitigated in the second book. Given the lines I saw Sunday I'm sure they franchise will do well.

Interesting "article" that deals with the reaction to some of the black characters in the movie...

"why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie"
The sad part is, I can hear the 16 year old version of just about every girl I went to high school with saying something exactly like this.
