We all know this is out there, but that doesn't make it any less shocking when it happens. And we learned in November that there are a LOT of folks out there who harbor a latent bigotry which reared its ugly head behind a lot of voting booth curtains.

      A couple things.

      1. Of course I agree with the overall sentiment of being tolerant of opinions.

      2. It is rather amusing coming from the right, and coming in the defense of the new administration.

We on the left have an interesting problem. We just lived through 8 years of the right collectively behaving like a toddler. Now a toddler has taken over the White House. So what do we do? What does a good person do when confronted by a bad person? I think most of us are trying to keep our dignity while still harboring no illusions about the baseness of the adversary. The fact that the adversary has no self-reflection and does not accept responsibility for their descent into vileness precludes the possibility they will ever engage sincerely.

The right has essentially stabbed somebody and is now saying incredulously, "you mad bro?" No doubt that plays well in the funny pages of the Washington Times or the comedy routines at Breitbart. But about the best we can do is pledge "won't get fooled again," circle the wagons, and plan our resistance and our eventual counter-revolution. The knife-wielding thug is still there and his "we should be united" gambit is transparently ill-intentioned.

Your side cannot escape its behavior. There has to be accountability, and if that doesn't come from yourselves it's going to come from us.

It's a part of the vocabulary, albeit slang, but still a part. As we learned from "1984", one step towards fascism is the limitation of vocabulary.

If only Martin Luther King had realized the real civil rights battle was the freedom to shout "N-GGER!"

One is an empty word, the other is not speech. I would expect even an ivy league graduate to understand that one...
