I feel like I've heard this song more the last few years since the complaints started than I have ever in my life. And that's actually my biggest problem with it all, because I hate this song immensely.

But mister, it actually is cold outside.

I get a kick out of how it's a Christmas song and yet there's not a single mention of any holiday in the song.

It depends on who sings it. There are versions that are unlistenable to the point of ripping the radio out of your dashboard and hurling it into oncoming traffic, but there are good versions out there.

The other thing is the whole point of the song is she's looking for an excuse to stay.

That's why I said, "I really doubt that's the point..." but I could see how some might take it and run. Simma da na.

I'm guessing it's overblown. Maybe she's fielding calls from 10,000 pi55ed off Bern-Outs who want to transfer, but that's still a fraction of the population.

I'm more impressed with paying $6K for a college matchmaker.

I think all this talk these days about "racists" and "racism" is a bit over-blown; the issue really seems to be one of ethnicity, not race. For example, in my experiences through the years,

-- I really like Jamaicans a lot; by ethnic group they are tied for 2nd (with Jews) among my friendships. However, I don't like Haitians very much at all.
-- I like Cubans and most Mexicans; Puerto Ricans, not so much.
-- I like most Indians, but have not yet met a Pakistani I can like
-- I like Welsh and Scots, but English, not so much.
-- I like Dutch, but Belgians, meh
-- I like Norwegians considerably more than Swedes.
-- I like Poles, but Russians, not so much.
-- I like Hungarians, but Serbs, meh
-- I like Irish and Jews more than Italians and Greeks

and on and on and on.

If I could make an analogy from statistics, the deviation around the median for most races today is far wider than the medians are separated from each other. There is so much overlap, and such increased awareness of differentiation within each race, that "racism" itself is just too broad a term to have any useful meaning.

"Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy." -- W. B. Yeats

no, it's just your sense of perspective that's inoperative....

seriously, if you cannot tell the difference between a Jamaican and a Haitian, then you have no right to call anyone else a "racist" because you are implicitly assuming that all black people are indistinguishable from each other.

Some folks just will never understand that "sandbagging" works in other venues besides poker. Your response reinforces the point I was making at the outset, you know.
