The whole idea of, either you are on board or you are shouted down without a chance at a hearing, is what I find annoying.
And completely fictional, but don't let that hold you back.

When crowds hoot people down it's not because they're PC, it's because they're evincing a mob mentality. It's just as likely to happen with righties -- the only difference is righty mobs sometimes bring a rope.

Right, it's just my eyes and ears playing tricks on me! Good thing you were standing right there beside me when it happened, so that you could properly interpret reality for me.

Facts and logic never stand in the way of a good left-wing narrative, I'll grant you that part.

Sorry, Kep, I guess my response to you could be construed as a micro-aggression.

        So here's my micro apology.

The issue is that this is happening at two levels. One is here on threads. One can point out an example of a single college in Maine doing something goofball in terms of PC. Valid.

The other happens at the level of popular media. Because there's an understanding that message board PC sentiment exists...celebs/pundits overuse it and abuse it like crazy. 'Hispanics are criminals...oh and I don't wanna be PC'. Frankly the anti PC blowback from media is much more widespread and detrimental vs. a single PC decision somewhere. Media anti PC overhype creates cultural conflicts and indirectly exacerbates structural national problems like congress not being able to talk (because 'well...screw you, I do what I want').

I'm at an advantage here because I know a lot of people who are supposed to be the Big Bads of the "PC side" of the argument -- you know, those horrible Brooklyn-living hipster Ivy League elitists who supposedly want to wrap their little snowflakes in packing peanuts and prevent them from ever feeling a chilly breeze or hearing a cruel word.

Only problem is, they're reasonable, sensible, and have a sense of humor, and they think all that stuff is idiotic and overblown, same as you do -- same as we all do. All the stuff that gets thrown around as supposedly "PC mindset" is just strawman examples -- individual, dumb things that get cranked out of the bureaucratic machine and that everybody -- even the elitists -- then immediately agrees goes too far and should be modified.

"PC" has become such a useful political cudgel that nobody stops to realize it's a solution in search of a problem. It's bullsh-t. It's just the latest incarnation of country folk complaining about the "soft hands of city people -- soft hands from counting money instead of doing real work."
I have a friend who would get mad at me when I'd make fat jokes about myself because she thought I was being mean towards fat people and projecting a negative self image. Are you really telling me that the PC mindset doesn't exist?

It exists on the same level as the racist right-wing nuts. I'd argue the latter group outnumbers it by a significant margin, however.

That's only because racism has been around longer. Give it time, those numbers will switch.

So long as this country remains a center-right country, it won't.

Exactly. More people are hiding behind anti-PC then ever hid behind PC.

I'm telling you there isn't some Big PC out there coming to take our freedumbs.

If you're fat and you make a fat joke and a thin person says "don't do that" you should laugh them out of the room.

If you're fat and you make a fat joke and a fat person says "don't do that" you should have a conversation, fat on fat so to speak.

Generally speaking, "PC" can be summed up in four words. "Don't be a jerk." Obviously, jerks take offense to that, but all anti-PC is is jerks playing their own PC card and saying "Waaaaaaaaaaaah... I WANNA be a jerk!"

Don't get me wrong there is some PC over use...but it definitely goes both ways.

For example, what if in many of the posts in this thread the label of 'PC' was replaced by 'respect' or 'respectful'. That is to say, 'the dude was extremely PC' would be 'the dude was extremely respectful'. Might there be cases where the meaning might be similar but the outrage vanish?

I doubt it. Outrage is extremely fashionable these days. If you are not outraged about something, you aren't really truly alive.

This quote reminds me of a true story.

A pedantic, never-wrong progressive was lecturing his class about grammar. "Two negatives are often conjoined to produce a positive, but two positives are never conjoined to produce a negative."

A voice from the back drawls out, "Yeah...right."
