  • My Debut Novel - Robert's Rules of Karaoke

    Hello all,

There'll be a bit more shameless self-promotion later today on the Hobey Watch blog, but I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know about my debut novel, Robert's Rules of Karaoke, which will be available as an e-book from TheWriteDeal starting this Sunday. What's it about, you ask? Well, I'm glad to tell you...

Twenty-something New Yorker Rob Olson wants what any young man would―a great woman who can appreciate, not only his hockey addiction, but his Friday night Karaoke habit. A consummate planner, Rob lives by rules, especially the ones he and his best friend Chuck come up with for their favorite pastime, like “Robert’s Rule of Karaoke No. 24: Never take on Freddie Mercury. You and Freddie both lose.” But when Rob meets Liz, a free-spirited artist with the self-assurance to stand up to his overbearing mother and to his best friend’s naysaying girlfriend Gia, it’s the end of his world as he knows it. Whether he’ll end up feeling fine is another question altogether.
Now, obviously, I think this book will appeal to those of you who spend time in the Song Association threads here in the Cafe. However, there's also a college hockey thread that runs through the book. Rob is a BU alum and big Terrier hockey fan, and the other major characters in the story went to Harvard, BC and Wisconsin. The 2008 Beanpot figures prominently in the story, as does a Cornell-Quinnipiac game at Lynah Rink. For you western folks, there are also references to the Red Pepper, "In Heaven, There Is No Beer," and "You've Said It All."

I wrote the book while I was still working for CSTV, and I'm so happy to finally see it published. I hope some of you who have read my writing about hockey will also enjoy Robert's Rules of Karaoke, along with it's associated Facebook page, Twitter feed, Spotify playlist and Pandora station.

    Thanks so much!

Is it exclusively an e-book or will there be a print distribution as well? If not I might finally have to fold and use my phone's e-book app. I try to do karaoke at least once a week so I can see what rules I have in common with the book.

I'm especially curious as BU grad and BU hockey fan since karaoke was a very pervasive part of the culture while in undergrad... (*sigh* T's on Tuesdays...)

It's e-book only for now...part of what this publisher does is try to get its writers hooked up with print publishers, so we'll see if that happens. For now, though, the phone is definitely your best bet. It can also be bought as a PDF if you wanted to print it off your computer.

I actually never went to T's for karaoke (although T's does make an appearance in the book). I've heard it was packed, though.

Re: My Debut Novel - Robert's Rules of Karaoke

Got an update for you folks...the official website for Robert's Rules of Karaoke launched this afternoon.

The talk of Adam Lambert possibly joining up with Queen for the Sonisphere festival in Europe this summer made it especially timely.

            Thanks!

There you have it, more typical eastern bias.
"The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." George Orwell, 1984

"One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its Black Gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep, and the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire and ash and dust, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume." Boromir

"Good news! We have a delivery." Professor Farnsworth

I wanted to say congrats! I have a cousin who's a romance novel author and I know how much work it takes to write and get published. Good luck...
