I agree. I bet the Republicans in the House and Senate and running for Prez do not. Just like they didn't agree with what Obama did in Libya.

Wonderful news. More than one million Americans will have served in Iraq.

Really like this too. No need to keep troops there. Any AQ infiltration can easily be dispatched with a few drone strikes. I'm waiting for McCain to blabber some idiocy about Obama cutting and running in Iraq. Romney will mumble "no comment", Perry will talk about how job growth in Texas has outpaced job growth in Iraq, and Bachmann will credit God and George W Bush (but not necessarily in that order).

I've got Republicans already telling me that this is just Obama pandering for votes.

.....it's 12+ months before the election. I would guess that the bump from officially ending the Iraq war will have dissipated by then.

They're inferring based on what they would do. But not everybody is willing to watch the world burn to serve their political interests.

No question, this withdrawal, with the results of the negotiations on the Status of Forces agreement dictated to Al Maliki from Tehran, is a triumph of President Expiration Date's foreign policy. No possible way anything could go wrong here. No possible chance the Mullahs will try to take advantage of this "success."

This is not him pandering for votes, this is him making a good decision as President that will have the side effect of gaining votes.

                    Bravo, Mr. President. Bravo.

I can already see the political ads praising his victories over top terrorist leaders, not allowing a single soldier to be lost in Libya, and now ending the Iraq war. It would likely be used to parry attacks that he is not strong on defense.

The troops will be home by the holidays. Merry Christmas America.

Recently, the family boarded a commercial flight for a vacation, making for some confusion. One of the kids looked around the crowded cabin and asked, "Mom, what are all these strangers doing on our plane?"
                      I hate when that happens.

Everything any president does is "political." From pardoning the national turkey (remember the hilarious episode of West Wing where CJ wound up with TWO turkeys in her office) to announcing the withrawal of our troops from a foreign country. Everything. The unknown is the extent to which political considerations influenced a presidential decision. And the extent to which the public can be made to forget previous, contradictory statements by a chief executive. In Deadmeat's case, several years of statements about how the war in Iraq was "lost" and the surge "couldn't possibly work," and how he was "committed to seeing to it that Iraq survived as an independent country." What we're left with now is Deadmeat taking credit for whatever success we've had in Iraq and for "bringing our boys home," generally always popular. Clearly, political considerations played a significant role here, given Deadmeat plans in part to campaign as the reincarnation of Metternich. The question is: what does this "success" mean for the probable confrontation down the road with Iran? More likely? Less likely? Sooner? Later? Less costly? More costly? Frankly, I don't see pulling out of Iraq, under these circumstances, as diminishing the likelihood of a reckoning with Iran nor delaying that day of reckonong or making that day of reckoning less costly. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Old Poe really needs to come up with some better nicknames. And stop living up to the Obama can do no right republican talking points.

And wow the sacrifices that family has to make... just inspiring.

C'mon yourself. I've already explained, but will do so again for the slow students: "Deadmeat" is how John Kass of the Chicago Tribune referred to the former governor of Illinois. I think it's an appropriate way to refer to our beloved leader. I realize it's a deviation from 8 years of respect for Bush, but I'm doing the best I can. And it's especially noteworthy that's the only takeaway from my post: a horrified, high pitched whine that I'm "insulting" the "smartest guy in the room" and in all "57" states for that matter. Grow up, ladies.
