When ESPN was being "fair and equitable", the ratings still sucked ***. You're expecting them to throw more money into a firepit and complaining when they don't.

I liked Terra Nova, even as campy as it was. Not enough other people did, so it's cancelled. I like hockey. Not enough other people do, as they watch the NFL combine in larger numbers, so it runs 10 minutes a week and is 3rd or 4th on the story list in its championship round.

I'm way more frustrated when they take something with mediocre ratings and try to shove it down my throat like women's bouncy hoops or non-US national team soccer then with their lack of interest in hockey.

Valid points, nick. However, a lot of casual sports fans only go to ESPN to get sports info. If they see that the NHL is not on the show, then they think it doesn't matter. They had a full slate of NHL games last night and they showed zero highlights. They market themselves as the TOTAL sports network. Somehow, they think Suh getting a speeding ticket is a little more important than teams chasing the 8th spot. If they had NBA teams chasing the final spot, they'd do 20 mins of highlights and another 15 of breakdown on the race.

This year's NCAA tournament is one of the main reasons why I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my XBox live to Gold. Should get me every game of the tournament in HD through the ESPN3 streaming plus I am getting most of this week's bouncy ball championship week games with no need to pay for multiple additional tiers on my cable tv package. Not sure I can even get ESPNU at all with my cable tv.

I'm curious how you think ESPN shoves soccer down your throat.

And once they lose the TV rights after the 2014 World Cup the sport will get the "NHL Treatment."

How are you determining "top story"? Not to get argumentative or pile on you, but what people are saying is that they did treat coverage like a national sports page and the top stories did get the lead no matter who holds the rights.

Rule of thumb. Game 7 in ANY major big four sport should be the lead. I understand that the impending strike is huge and so is Yanks-Sox. However, it's not as big as Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

You're making the incorrect assumption that it's still the "big 4".

I agree. Except Yankees-Red Sox isn't huge. They play almost 20 times every year. ESPN is basically NESN on steroids.

In the eyes of advertisers, NFL and MLB are the biggest two by far. NFL, MLB, and NBA are what constitutes "major sports" and the NHL is pretty much an afterthought.

Here's a hint: we all know what ESPN thinks about hockey. Unless you call/email/etc en masse, nothing will change (and even if you do those things, nothing will probably change). So let it go. I've given up on it, since the lacrosse incident. Yes I called and emailed. Guess what? Doesn't matter. We don't have the $$ to change things.

No, the casual sports fans don't think it doesn't matter. They don't think about it at all, just like I don't think about NCAA baseball, softball, lacrosse, or basketball until it's placed in front of me.

It's the old story, hockey doesn't get the numbers when the games air, so it doesn't get press unless something really big happens. And unless that something really big is life threatening (skate to the throat), it will not get top billing on a national highlight reel. Either grow the sport to create interest and generate money, support an organization that does (Herb Brooks Foundation) or learn to live with it. Just stop whining about it.
