Just be ready to swear and throw things at your TV when he strikes out in the 8th inning with runners on and the Tigers down by a run or two...
We're already used to that- Jackson, Boesch, Peralta, Miggy are not immune and the bottom half of the order is essentially a bye for whomever is pitching-especially with Raburn, Inge and our newest/oldest .090 batting back-up catcher returning to the Tigers. The only guy that you would not want out of the lineup this season in that situation just tore up his knee.

Fielder's contract is worth 43 million Hot 'n Readys alone.

We've got $446 million tied up in Verlander, Cabrera and Fielder alone. Maybe a little less now that Verlander is a couple years into his contract. The team was valued at $385 million sometime in the past year.

Again. This is it right here. This is championship or bust for Ilitch. He's 82 and the team is 55% leveraged, among the highest debt ratios in baseball. If we don't cash one in within 3 years, we won't win one in another 40, because that's about how long it's going to take Ilitch's kids to dig out of this debt.

I suspect we're going to ride the rapids with Cabrera at 3B. It might be a situation where he makes a 2-run error in the top of the 6th and then comes up in the bottom half and hits a 3-run cannon shot that comes down somewhere in Nashville. If not, DH is blocked for the duration. We need to face the fact that we're going to have a well below average defense. It's going to be up to our pitching depth and our 2-7 hitters to blast our way out of things. Get used to a lot of 3:30-4 hour ball games this year.

I'm kind of wondering if some of the plan here is to just to make it to the trade deadline in the hunt, and see who's willing to make a deal for whatever parts the Tigers would really need at that point. Could be that somebody else in the AL Central sees that the next couple of years that they're screwed, so they might be willing to trade a great second or third baseman for prospects to be named later. Maybe something like a rent a player deal perhaps. On paper, I would think that's about the best move that makes the most sense.

From a business standpoint (with your focus on accounting and mine in marketing and finance) this is real dangerous. BUT, if you look at it from the standpoint of everything Ilitch owns, including the Wings, it's not as bad. What it does do is limit the movement he can make for that other franchise in terms of FA signings or contract extensions. Little Ceasars +Olympia Entertainment is in pretty good position- especially the assets Marion owns separately-but this just placed the poker chips at the casino "all in".

Makes you wonder if he really could have bought the Pistons and still manage the Wings and Tigers like this, though.

                  Wow.

Fielder will earn $23 million in each of his first two years with Detroit, then will make $24 million annually in the final seven seasons of his $214 million, nine-year contract, according to terms obtained by The Associated Press.
Fielder would get an additional $500,000 if he's the AL MVP, $200,000 if he's second through fifth and $100,000 if he's sixth through 10th. For each MVP he wins after the first, he would get $1 million.

He also would get $100,000 if he's an All-Star starter and $50,000 if he's a reserve, or alternatively $100,000 if he's a Baseball America or Sporting News postseason All-Star. He also would receive $100,000 for a Gold Glove, $100,000 for a Silver Slugger, $100,000 for the Hank Aaron Award, $150,000 for league championship series MVP and $200,000 for World Series MVP.

In addition, he gets a hotel suite on the road.
                  A hotel suite, huh?

Two rather unusual IPHRs. The one at Miller Park: Wouldn't the Toronto right fielder have known the local ground rules? And, the one at the Metrodome, what else can you say, how many outfielders lost sight of the ball on the fly in that place? In both of them, the ball isn't played until Prince is either past third base or at third base. He was motoring around the bases pretty good at the Metrodome though.

It's OK guys, I've figured out how to help the debt situation. Everyone in Michigan just has to buy a Hot N Ready for nine straight days and we'll have paid off the entire contract for Verlander, Miggy and Prince. And with some locations charging 5.55 instead of 5 bucks, we'll help it even more.

I'll let you do the math as to how many $14 ballpark pizzas that is.

Listened to part of the press conference today. Ilitch sounds ancient. He sounded like he was 132 instead of 82.

Leyland said on the radio this a.m. that Inge has no chance at playing SS or 2b. We'll see about that.

Also said that Inge is in great shape and that he was "sick" last season, whatever that meant- mono?

                            Didn't rule out a deal for a 5th starter.
