I saw a link to this on CNN. I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for these things. I could probably spend the next two days reading this and getting a chuckle, which unfortunately, is a little sad.

That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Even worse, I saw a print version of the same kind of document focused solely on the CDC and some of the "studies" they are conducting.

I've seen about a dozen of these. They always end in "... could be practicing law."

I think I need to share 2 things I've overheard during my lunch at 2 different local restaurants the last 2 days:

Yesterday, I went to a local Fridley (<-First problem) sports bar to get a burger. I was craving a burger, and this place delivered on a tasty burger. Anyway, I was sitting there, by myself, messing around on my phone, waiting for my burger, and I overhear a conversation:

Old Guy: Does so and so have a baby yet?
Younger Guy (appeared to be old guy's son): No....why would you think they'd have a baby?
Old Guy: Well, they're not siblings, so I figure there's no reason to not make a baby.

              Well, with logic like that....

Then, today, at a different restaurant I hear a guy say this to the people he was eating with:

Weird guy with pony tail: I just want to forget about my dead wife. The last time I saw her was when I embalmed her. Yeah, I used to own my own mortuary service, so I figured I'd do it myself. I don't remember much of it, I was pretty drunk when I did it.
Having a clear conscience just means you have a bad memory or you had a boring weekend.

              RIP - Kirby

I tried my best to come up with some sort of reply to either of those, but I got nothin'. Wow.

Not sure I can find the link; I read a story in print about how oil well derricks are providing better habitats for marine life than artificial reefs.

                      ah, here it is.

A new study led by researchers at Occidental College and the University of California at Santa Barbara has found that the oil platforms dotting the California coast are fantastic for sea life.

In a 15-year study, researchers found that the ecosystems that build up around artificial rigs host 1,000 percent more fish and other sea life than natural habitats such as reefs and estuaries.

The California rigs outstripped even famously rich ecosystems such as the coral reefs of French Polynesia.
though maybe this story properly belongs in a different thread....

Yeah, that is why I included the location, I figured it would help explain why I was hearing this, at least to the Twin City locals. Fridley is a hell hole.

I think I read somewhere about how they were using abandoned industrial equipment to shore up reefs -- maybe in the South China Sea? It was one of those stories where Bad Polluter Inc. dumps all their excess crap, then a decade later when people decide they ought to go clean it up it turns out the sea life has incorporated it into the ecosystem to such an extent that tearing it up would be a net loss.
