Anyone who doesn't know that a 2x4 is actually 1.5x3.5 is a moron. Another idiotic lawsuit.

You're about two weeks behind on this one, Shooter.

I'm not sure if I'm supporting your point, but I had no idea until this story came out a couple weeks ago. I doubt more than 10% of women and 10% of American city dwellers know either. It's not a real relevant life skill for a lot of us.

That's probably true of any specialty field. Anyone with even the slightest experience in working with wood learns the "true" dimensions of lumber very early on. Similarly with anyone who does even the most basic electrical wiring, you quickly learn the difference between 12-gage and 14-gage wire, which no doubt sounds like complete gobble-de-gook otherwise.

Behind the splashy headlines is the fact that for lumber there actually is an organization tasked with setting the standards for dimensional lumber that has been around for decades. For some busybody AG to ignore such well-established and widely understood standards is just overreach. Are they next going to tell nurses to stop measuring injections in cubic centimeters and force all medical professionals to convert to cubic inches instead?

If they really wanted to be useful, they'd force auto makers to report fuel economy standards in gallons per 100 miles instead. As discussed in more detail in a different thread (it might be Monty Hall We Have a Problem, IIRC, not quite sure), miles per gallon is not a very useful measure.

Repeating it on a second thread doesn't make it true. Miles per gallon conveys exactly the same information as gallons per mile. If you personally have a harder time wrapping your head around one of them, that's not the metric's fault.
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

Miles per gallon makes much, much more sense than gallons per 100 miles. That would be a completely idiotic unit to use.
