  • The lake we are on has risen at least 6 inches since this AM. We had more torrential rain until about 3pm. Finally sunny. Went out in the kayak and all the docks on the lake are under water. People are trying to weight the sections down so they don't float away. Rescued the next door neighbor's shore stairs that were drifting off shore. The boat landing is usually a drop of a foot to the water. I got in my kayak and paddled off. The water was thigh deep and climbing. I can't imagine what is happening to the folks that need to hay.

    • Not sure if this will work but here's a shot of the finished product. Just need to cover the drip lines with the mulch.

      • Deer have snacked on the Hosta growing along my basement walls. What was about 15 ft of nice ground cover is now just stems. The over population of deer around here is unreal. Brown tails eating all the leaves off the oaks a few years back has dried up the acorns that deer eat. I’ve watched them eat leaves out of one of my brush piles. The state in there infinite wisdom won’t issue any deer permits for this area.
I swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell.

we just mildly managed our dandelions in the backyard. They mostly stick to those. Their favorite food.

                LOL! That's not great.

We did put up chickenwire around our asiatics and the two plants my wife likes that I can never remember the name of. Which were supposed to be animal resistant. Once the lilies are done we'll pull the bulk of the wire.

We've been meaning to try Liquid Fence which is supposed to be pretty effective.

                • So sore. And have spent so much money.

ripped up ton of sod to make new gardens. Planted butterfly magnolia tree. A few new ornamental trees and shrubs.

removed all sod around and under crab tree. My first shade garden. Filling it with lungwort, lady’s mantle, forget me nots, Japanese forest grass and astilbe. Ripping up sod hurts , will hire someone next time.

have coneflowers and sedum for around new magnolia. Already have salvia and allium nearby.

turns out Gertens stocks their clearance section every Thursday and there are vultures who wait. Whatever was there in smaller perennials is gone now but was able to snag red twigged dogwood for $4 and red prince weigelia fir $10.

also random- but I’ve found two things that are cheaper at bachmanns- lungwort ($7 per plant cheaper!! And lamium ground cover).

Everything hurts. And it is hilarious to watch my millionaire next door neighbors hire la escapers to do in two days what has taken me weeks. Sigh.

                  on to mulching now

A beautiful one. Gertens current has red prince and 3 other types in clearance section as of last night. The dogwoods are normally $35 but are $4.

it’s a hike to clearance section but worth it. Literally digging out more sod today to plant my gorgeous $10 red prince

Roses, spirea, some trees in there too

Where is it? Back left corner facing the main building from the road?

Way back past the trees, it’s not well advertised. If you walked from main building over to back where all the trees are, keep going to where pavement ends and dirt begins, and there’s a small “clearance” sign

                          • Found them. Very nice. Some are obvious why they're being clearanced. Others not do much.

Exactly. I don’t buy things that look dodgy which is why I hit up Thursday or Friday before things dry out. But the weigelia I got is just gorgeous and appears healthy

My wife ended up picking a red prince. They looked the best of the entire bunch. Almost indistinguishable from the full price. Grabbed a couple tangos as well. For the price of a single plant we're getting three. Jeeze.

even if one fails we're still going to come out ahead.
