Good MOrning America is obsessed with the Casey Anthony. The blond bubble Nancy Grace pontificates in her southern belle way and talks over eveyone. ALways right before I want to watch the weather. Beat a dead horse?

See, we agree on something: Nancy Grace. I won't tell if you won't.

Per CNN, she walks July 13th on time served.

Saw another interesting article last night as well: Nancy Grace's endless screeching about this case might have actually helped Casey go free. If she doesn't turn this thing into a three-ring media circus, they don't have to go out of county for an untainted jury and sequester them and take all the other gazillion precautions they did. Also, the prosecution doesn't have a lynch mob pressuring them to push for murder 1 and could have settled for a manslaughter or negligent homicide, and we have a conviction.

Maybe they could prosecute her for obstruction of justice.

              They **** well could.

Imagine if Baez goes on that show, explains everything I just said, and gives her a big hug. Her brains might actually ooze out of her nose on national television.

ETA: Better yet, she invites the prosecutor on and he tears into her for ruining their case.

Probably right about that. I can see what the juror was saying last night, that they didn't have a weapon or a cause of death for the kid. Not calling the police for a mouth leads me to think that something criminal did happen, mostly a coverup, but other than that, they really didn't have much to go on the case there as far as hard evidence goes. Suspicious behavior yes, but no bloody glove at all to point to.

I've seen some speculation (based on anecdotes) that juries now frequently exhibit what's called "The CSI effect." They want absolute proof of guilt, so the theory goes, because the various iterations of CSI ("CSI Traverse City," "CSI Edina") have conditioned them of the need for massive sciedntific evidence in every case, particularly the high profile ones. And they have become less amenable to circumstantial evidence.

The two big escape hatches in this case were the suggestions that Casey Anthony had been sexually abused and that the baby died as a result of an accident. There was no direct evidence presented that either circumstance prevailed (the judge precluded her lawyer from discussing the sexual abuse because there was no evidence). Despite those facts, did the fairytales about abuse and an accident impact the jury? Does the mere mention of an "explantation" absent any evidence constitute "reasonable doubt?" Is that "reasonable?" Was the jury even paying attention when Baez mentioned sexual abuse in his opening but not his closing?

Which part of the burden of proof is on the prosecution don't you get? The jurors said they didn't know how she died. Pretty tough to convict on murder if they don't even have a cause of death.

Raped her with a stick, bludgeoned her with a 40 pound piece of asphalt. His last words?

"I have hurt a lot of people. ... I take full blame for everything. I am sorry for what I did," he said in the death chamber.

"One more thing," he said as the drugs began taking effect. Then he shouted twice, "Viva Mexico!"
What a great guy. His family seems awesome too.

After his execution, relatives of Leal who had gathered in Guadalupe, Mexico, burned a T-shirt with an image of the American flag in protest. Leal's uncle Alberto Leal criticized the U.S. justice system and the Mexican government and said, "There is a God who makes us all pay.

I worked in Houston (perhaps the toughest law and order jurisdiction in Texas) for over a decade. And when you're sentenced to death in the Lone Star State it's not an intellectual exercise--they're fixin' to come git you. Perry has averaged about 23 executions a year during his tenure as Governor. Democrat Ann Richards ignored a personal plea for clemency from Pope John Paul II for a dude who had raped and murdered a 75 year old nun. You won't get to be governor or stay governor if you won't sign those death warrants.

Famously, Democrat Mark White, had been governor and then lost, was running again in '90. And he ran a TV spot in which he's seen walking through a corridor of huge portraits of guys executed during his watch. And he said something like "only the Governor can make executions happen. I have. And I will." Only in Texas, LOL.
