    Re: IIHF World Championships

Craig Smith with another PP tally. Norwegian killers were out there for 1:25 before the goal. 4-2 Final. Haugen for Norway saves 45 of 49. Montoya stops 13 of 15.

USA-Sweden at 1:15 PM (Central) Wednesday. Take a late lunch. Buy Ryan Miller a ticket to Slovakia.

I get the idea behind using it as a development tournament, but it's painful watching a bunch of scrubs in USA sweaters three years in a row, even if it does help at the Olympics.
And now you know why no American will ever be in the Triple Gold Club.

Actually the World Championships is a joke. It's a tournament completely slanted towards the Euro members of the IIHF as evidenced by the fact it takes place at the end of the Euro season but not the Stanley Cu Playoffs. And the fact that it's played every year.

Considering that 14 of the 16 nations participating are in Europe, that's probably fair.
Actually, I don't mind that aspect of it. It lets some of the other nations develop while most of the "Big Six" players are still in the NHL. Countries like Switzerland and Germany have put together pretty good teams the past few years using mostly players from their national leagues, which helps grow the sport.

Chris Kreider has looked pro-ready for the US. Hopefully he makes the jump.

Stole a point when his team was outshot 50-20, not a bad start.
                  Terrible shootout, though.

He's a better goalie that a lot of people think he is. However, 2006 will always, always hang over his head.

                        Re: IIHF World Championships

Conklin picks up where he left off in the shootout, giving up four in a period and a half. And we're back to Montoysieve. US down 4-2 to Canada's JV.
With a decent backstop, this team might have had a shot at a medal. But maybe Ryan Miller was just too tired.

Miele is having a great tournament. Wonder why he didn't play the first three games.

It's a shame we couldn't get Quick or Miller to sign up for this thing. Even a drunk Jeff Frazee might not suck as much.

Between him and Blake Wheeler playing keep away with his own linemates, it was easy to see why they lost. In positives Miele's play is making Scott Gordon look like a bigger idiot for scratching him.

Had no idea that one of the sites was Kosice. That's right down the road from the jerkwater town the Slovak side of my family spent ten generations in. It's essentially the Wisconsin of Central Europe: healthy cows, strong alcohol, and stout women.
