  • Re: Deadliest Catch - Season 7

Obviously the finances of all boats are not the same whether it be expenses, ownership take, captain guarantees, etc., but there are some wide payout disparities between some boats for similar season-long hauls. For instance two boats (forget which) that each brought home slightly over $3mm in crab paid $150k and $74k to each deckhand respectively.

I used to want to give Jake Harris the benefit of the doubt but that's all gone.

I'd hop on the Northwestern, Seabrooke or the Time Bandit. I'd fish with Keith if I weren't a greenhorn.

As I it for maintenance to fix my lock...

I think the main difference is that Josh gives a **** about what happens in his life. Jake just goes around like everything should be easy street. Sad to say, a lot of this was probably set in motion way earlier in life. Josh may have had some learning to do but at least he had the fundamentals of what it takes to achieve down. Jake doesn't want nor care about achieving. He's had it handed to him so far.

And, yet, it fits him perfectly, in many more ways than one.

As I said before, I don't think Phil did either of them any favors. Josh at least has a fighting chance. Jake's headed for a crash and burn, and sooner rather than later.

I didn't watch the first few years so I have no perspective on this, but reality is 90% of their true existence wasn't viewed on the show and we don't really know which type of values Phil tried to instill in his kids. There are plenty of examples of kids of captains that appear to not have taken their lot for granted.

I think of 5 brothers that grew up together in my neighborhood. Same parents, same jobs, same schools, same house, etc., etc., etc. 4 of the brothers are married to this day, hold down jobs, no divorce, no serious picadillos I can point to, but one brother decided to sell drugs, got busted with a ton of acid in a traffic stop and won't see the light of day for nearly two decades. I would never think to blame the parents for his decisions. I think Josh is an example that Phil did most things right yet Jake for whatever reason decided to go his own way.

Phil was on a boat when both were growing up.

You also have to figure in the make up of the crew. How many men are on deck, how many greenhorns and how many are full full or partial shares. Then you factor in if there was repairs needed or other costs and the disparities make more sense.

I missed how much the Rambling Rose crew made this year (was on the phone) but I got to say, as much as I dislike Elliot his "friends" were whiny jerks and should have been canned. He is the captain and you are the crew, shut up. Can you imagine if they were on Keith's boat he would have thrown them off midtrip. Off the boat you can say what you like, on the boat you show the captain respect no matter what.

Even with all of the crap on the RR, they still made almost 50k each. I agree, shut the hell up.

I may be misremembering but when Jake first showed up on the CM Phil was talking him up as a future captain from the beginning. He seemed way more coddled than Josh was who busted his butt as a greenhorn and deckhand. That may play a part in this.

Very possible. I didn't see much of the first few seasons so maybe he had a big hand in it.

That may be in spite of Phil? Don't discount the mom in all of this(I'm pretty sure you don't having kids of your own). Its obvious they are different people and thats not shocking, it happens in most families.

Seeing your farmily when you get off the boat.
                            Seeing my son be born.

Captain Wild Bill and the Kodiak are parting ways. From what I am reading he may still be doing some more fishing up there to pass on some more experience to his son Zack but it will be on a different boat I guess.
