So how is this different? Title X money goes to all sorts of family planning groups, and none of it is spent on abortion. Seems kind of equitable, doesn't it?

The GOP might have a leg to stand on if they were proposing to cut Title X funding for everyone, instead of just a member of the democratic base. Nothing like shutting down the government over a social war issue.

As with all politics, it's only ok when my side does it. If they can get away with it, more power to them, it's not like the Dems are smart enough to counter this with any sort of unified and effectual effort.

Here's a 2006 article where the feds spent $2.15 billion on "faith based initiatives"

Planned Parenthood's part of this year's budget? $75 million

And we'll know how much the Democrats caved if they allowed the EPA to be neutered by the 50 enviromental riders attached to the House budget.

Actually, it would be the same as cutting funding for women's health and for poor people's medical care. Which they do ALL THE TIME.

If you want to buy Kos' stance that this is a heroic last stand astride the gender rights door, I can't stop you.

But all money is fungible, right? So I may be paying for the charity work, but my tax dollars are allowed to support a church - which can ignore laws when it comes to hiring/firing workers among other things.

Let them raise their own money. If they provide such a valuable service they should have no problem convincing the public to donate to them.

You can really be hilarious sometimes. So if the government doesn't fund something, that's equivalent to outlawing it.

Hey Kepler, you and the Missus can be proactive. Sadly, I live too far away to take part.

Facebook event: Let's dump trash at Boehner's pad

Washington (CNN) - If the federal government shuts down come Friday, House Speaker John Boehner may be in for quite a mess at his Washington, D.C. residence if some Facebook users have their way.

A Facebook event, entitled "If Boehner shuts down the government I am taking my trash to his house," has popped up and is gaining steam as the shutdown showdown ramps up on Capitol Hill. If the federal government shuts down, one of the District's services that will stop is trash pickup.

"Speaker John Boehner is ready to shut down the government, including District of Columbia city services like trash collection," it says on the page. "Well, if he won't allow us to use OUR TAX DOLLARS to pick it up, maybe we should just BRING IT TO HIM."

As of 2:30 p.m. EST there are 1,476 attending; 126 are listed as maybe; 156 aren't showing up; and 4,652 are still making up their minds (much like Congress, apparently).

Money goes to Planned Parenthood for all sorts of things, so they can shift money around lots of ways. My understanding is that faith-based initiatives typically provide a specific amount of dollars for a specific function, and those dollars only go toward that. Big difference. Planned Parenthood will provide abortion to people regardless, so it's easy to see how money provided to them can be used elsewhere to free up other money for abortions. The faith-based initiatives generally wouldn't provide those services or level of services absent receiving those specific funds. It's really a pretty clear differentiation.

It is when you take medical care away from those who can't afford it. They basically stop getting it then. But, you go ahead and bury your head in the sand.

Pretty sure we have these things called free clinics and hospitals where care is provided.

                      - and for the record I have no problem getting rid of the faith-based funding.

Fortunately, hospitals are free and the clinics are all well-staffed, fully funded and provide excellent service in abundance to everyone who needs it.

So then there shouldn't be an issue with cutting funding to PP. The gov't is still going to wind up spending just as much. Everyone wins

                              This should kill the economy.

As the government nears a potential shutdown, federal agencies are beginning to release estimates of how many employees could be furloughed. Many employees are still unsure of whether they are considered essential or nonessential, and have been told to report to work on Monday. Here's a tally provided by agencies of how many workers would be furloughed or considered excepted in the event of a shutdown. We're also linking to agency contingency plans as we get them. Check back regularly for updates.
Education: 4,150 workers out of 4,465 full- and part-time employees would be furloughed.
Energy: No furloughs in the short term.
Environmental Protection Agency: Of 17,721 employees, 16,061 workers would be furloughed.
General Services Administration: 11,298 workers out of 12,697 employees would be furloughed.
Health and Human Services: 47,693 workers departmentwide would be furloughed.
Homeland Security: Approximately 184,000 employees out of 230,000 workers across the department would be excepted.
Interior: From 52,000 to 55,000 out of 68,900 total employees would be furloughed.
Government Accountability Office: Out of 3,000 employees, fewer than 30 would be considered excepted.
Housing and Urban Development: The department has 9,700 employees. Of that number, 846 would be excepted and 8,854 furloughed.
Justice: Of 117,529 employees, 94,261 workers would be excepted.
Labor:14,449 out of 16,099 workers would be furloughed.
Merit Systems Protection Board: All 216 employees except the three-member Presidentially Appointed Senate Confirmed (PAS) Board would be furloughed.
Office of Personnel Management: 724 employees would be furloughed out of 6,514 total employees.
Postal Regulatory Commission: Out of 71 employees, five appointed commissioners and three tech/support staff would be considered excepted.
Small Business Administration: 2,102 out of 3,230 employees would be furloughed.
Social Security Administration: 20,846 employees out of 68,028 would be furloughed.
Transportation: 17,870 workers out of 58,011 would be furloughed.
Treasury: Of 127,000 total employees, 92,000 workers would be furloughed.
