  • Plattsburgh defeats the Ottawa 67s 3-0 in their first exhibition game this afternoon. 2 of the 3 goals were set plays at the very start of power plays.

    Freshemen standouts were Kayson Ruegge, Tessa Morris up front and defender Seoyoung Yoo. Standout returning players were junior forward Molly Riggi and sophomore D Meghan Forsyth.

    Freshman netminder Maddy Stetson was the standout goalie today, she played the 2nd. Sophomore Lewis started and freshman Varecka (the Wesleyan de-committ) closed.

    The Cardinals were without captain and defender Mattie Norton who was in street clothes on the bench with assistant coach Emma Killeen helping on the back bench.

    Righty forward Emma McLean who had been a center and right wing her first two seasons played RD in Norton's place. There were definitely some rough moments for her which is to be expected being new to the position. That coach moved a righty forward to the the defense position rather than having one of his 4 lefty D cover the right side today has some implications as to the length of Norton's expected absence imo.

            • In an interesting battle, two teams who lost a lot from last season faced off yesterday afternoon. Gustavus defeated River Falls 3-2 in OT.

              Again, should be 2 very interesting teams to follow. UWRF returns just 61% of their scoring from last years title team, while Gustavus returns a measly 53%(!!) of their scoring from last year.

              They’ll play another 3 times this year, which is sort of shocking, given Eau Claire (finally) agreed to play Gustavus again for the first time in five season, now that their “golden era” is most likely over.

              • Cortland beat Wilkes 3-2 in their exhibition.

                Plattsburgh defeated Trinity 5-1 in their 2nd exhibition. Goals from Olshansky, Orr, Fesette, Mattaliano, and Rugge. Olshansky who by all indications will be a power play specialist this season scored seconds into a Cardinal power play to open scoring. Orr would score on a scrum. Fesette sniped over the goaltender's shoulder from the circle. Mattaliano scored a puck that trickled under the goalie and Rugge scored after a defender shot off the glass behind the net so hard it landed at the doorstep. Sophomore Martina Exernova scored the lone Bantams' goal on a power play early in the third.

With four teams earning a bye, and hosting a quarterfinal, this inherently means they each get their own path, and the rest is up in the air. Again, one year too late with the Gustavus-River Falls disaster in 2024.
                      I did a quick (and I do mean quick) analysis of last year's field (based on this year's rules). I also assumed that Eau Claire would have been the 12 team that would have made a 12-team field. One through four got hard byes. That left one first round game that required a flight (there is no one seeded 5-12 that Eau Claire could bus to). The second round had the potential for as many as four flights or as few as 1 (if the right teams won or the QF matchups were tweaked slightly. Doing strict 1-4 gets a bye, there is no QF opponent for Adrian without a flight and there Eau Claire is the only possible opponent for Gustavus or UW River Falls. I will be curious how this shakes out in March...

                        ● Protection of top four ranked teams in the bracket;
                        ● Quality and availability of the facility and other necessary accommodations;
                        ● Geographic location (including such factors as rotation of sites, weather, accessibility and transportation costs);
                        ● Attendance history and revenue potential, which shall be considered necessary to assure fiscal responsibility.

                        Once selected, Teams 1-4 will receive the bye and host the quarterfinal round. If a team is unable to host the quarterfinal round, they may still receive the bye and be the visiting team in the quarterfinal round. Teams 5 through 12 will be grouped in clusters according to natural geographic proximity. A team may be moved to balance the bracket if geographic proximity is maintained (i.e., no flights are created). Teams should be paired and eligible sites should be selected according to the site selection criteria which includes geographic proximity (within 500 miles)."

                          Saturday's game is 7:15 am in Hagerstown.

                          Skate Frederick is hoping for a December reopening. Then things will get back to normal.

                          Rockville is 10 minutes from my house. I think I'll mosey on over.

                                Keene State could not make it a trifecta, as they lost 6-0 to Plymouth State.

                                Upset of the night goes to SUNY Canton, as despite being outshot 42-10 by USCHO #2 ranked Adrian, the Roos beat the Bulldogs 1-0 on an OT goal from sophomore forward Riley Andzel 1:44 seconds into the 3 on 3 OT.

                                The SUNYAC Women went undefeated today:
                                Cortland defeated Manhattanville 3-0.
                                Buff State 5 - Neumann 0
                                SUNY Potsdam 3 - King's 0
                                Oswego 2 - William Smith 1

                                St. Mary's beat Concordia Wisconsin 6-1. CUW hung in there to keep the Cardinals scoreless in the first but the dam busted in the 2nd in which SMU outscored their guests 4-1 and they woud score 2 more in the third. SMU forward Reese Heitzman would score 2 goals and add an assist to lead the way.

                                Utica held their season-opening tournament, defeating Suffolk 1-0 in a contentious game on a goal scored by Jordan Kowalski who buried the puck five hole from the circle despite being knocked to her knees. There was a lot of pushing and shoving and a couple of scrums, including one after Hailey Modlin of Utica decided to shoot the puck at the Rams goaltender despite the buzzer having already ended the 2nd period.

                                In the nightcap of this tourney, Wilkes played the 2024 NCAA Tournament runner-up Elmira close through most of the game. Wilkes would even tie it late in the third only for the Soaring Eagles to take the lead again just minutes later and they would add an ENG for a 4-2 Elmira win. Tomorrow we'll see Wilkes vs Suffolk and Elmira vs Utica.

                                Hamline 6 - Lawrence 0
                                Bethel 3 - Aurora 1. This one made me suspicious given the Matson sisters being in the portal and I checked after seeing this score and the Matson sisters are not rostered. I can't find them on any other roster for 2024-25 yet.
