  • Where has the UW band been?

    • As I recall, the band never shows up at LaBahn until the second semester. When volleyball is over?

Very disappointing. The football team, volleyball team and men's basketball team all on the road last weekend. I would think they could round up a few band members for games that were both sold out

That's what I thought happened, but I wasn't 100% sure. The first one was a rebound and she ended up on her back somehow like she thought it was under her but it wasn't, and then the puck got shot by her, I'm not sure if it was under or over her. I was curious how she ended up so down and out.

Exactly. Email badgerbandinfo@music.wisc.edu and express yourself.

            • Has anyone ever seen the band at Labahn in a location other than the seats? If the game is sold out to the general public, I'm not sure they could just round up some band members if there are no seats reserved for them.

Section 1 is always reserved for the media, band, and various other personnel, so the band can always come. I thought it was bizarre that there was a large band section at the women's basketball game that ended about an hour prior to puck drop and those band members couldn't have just walked across to LaBahn for women's hockey. Would be very interested to see how they allocate these pep bands for the various sporting events.

Looking at the replay on B1G+, it looked as though there was an immediate rebound threat right on the backdoor that happened to fumble it. Had that player handled the puck and got it on net, McNaughton would have been all over it in her split. But because of the missed opportunity and a bounce out to another layer of Tommiettes, it put her in a tough position to recover to that shot. Pretty sure it went by her right pad, low.

My understanding is that it is to a great extent voluntary; almost entirely voluntary. Marching band members take a class that is - I believe - one single credit; as such, it is not anywhere close to being commensurate to the time they put in to be part of the band. The 'pep bands' at the other sports/events are done on a volunteer basis, drawn from the marching band, with 'seniority' in effect for 'in demand' events, like men's basketball, etc.

So what you're asking is "Why didn't those college students who volunteered a couple hours of their weekend to play at the women's basketball then follow that up by also volunteering an additional couple hours of their weekend to play at the hockey game?"

This is somewhat right. (I was in the band my freshman year; couldn't make it work beyond that.) It's a one credit class (MUS 042) but during the football season we had practice Tuesday-Friday from 3:45-5:30. (This was 25 years ago so the information may need updating.) Football Saturdays were 6am for run-through at Camp Randall all the way through a couple of hours after the game concluded. The band also travels to a road game or two a year, a Lambeau Field game some years, as well as the odd high school gig here and there on non-travel road weekends.

For Varsity Band (second semester), there's an expectation that you will play a certain number of events and if sign up gets too crowded seniority decides the band. The flip side is that travel to road tournaments for sports like volleyball and women's hockey was based on how many of those specific games you'd gone to, so loading up on those gives you a better chance to travel.

The bigger factor is that one of the graduate assistants needs to be available to be the defacto "conductor" for the band since Leckrone (and now I assume Pompey) was already doing men's basketball and men's hockey and those people tend to be full time music majors already. When I was in the UW student section for volleyball in college there was a specific assistant conductor who usually did volleyball, but in the last couple of seasons at LaBahn the person in front has been different a lot. They need a basic level of signup beforehand as well to ensure you have the proper cross-section of instrumentation. (i.e you need to have a drummer, should have trumpets, trombones, euphos, tubas, etc).

So there's a lot of factors that go into the availability of the band.

                      • The real question is: will the UW band be at LaBahn on Thursday, January 2 at 7pm CT for the game against They Who Shall Not Be Named?

I have written to badgerbandinfo@music.wisc.edu to extend an invitation and suggest others do likewise.

Seeing as how most students won't be in town, I highly doubt there will be a band.

Someone like CrazyDave could better speak to this, but UM has a GWH hockey pep band for most games. Perhaps it is better supported by the music department, but my assumption was that given the marching band is huge, the same people don't need to attend all of the events that the band plays. Why do they play at women's hockey? I think they enjoy it. I would assume that band members at Wisconsin would also enjoy that women's hockey team, if the music department makes if feasible for them to play those games. Again, those with actual band experience are in a much better position to explain the thinking than I am.

There certainly are enough band members that the same ones don't have to do all the events in one weekend. Apparently there are 224 marchers on the field and another 76 in reserve. Maybe the VB team doesn't get the band one weekend and WH does instead if for some reason they are hand-cuffed. Whose got more Natties???

That has a Monty Python feel to it. I'm going to steal this.
