You have seen enough hockey to know there won't be much of a difference between the Emily of this year and Emily of past years. How many points this year would it take for that message to be clear?

    • Yale assistant coach Grant Kimball had some interesting notes and stats on the portal in the Monday, 5/13 post of his newsletter:

Since 2020 in women’s hockey… -42.75% of entrants wound up transferring to a new program.

-The number of portal entrants has increased each year by roughly 10% each year on average.
-46% of 2024 entrants thus far are Post Graduates… meaning 54% of entrants have multiple years of eligibility remaining. Post Grads made up 16% of entrants in 2020, 33% in 2021, 46 % in 2022, and 49% in 2023.

-64% of Unaided (players not receiving athletic scholarships prior to transferring) transfers in 2022 and 50% in 2023, received aid at their new institutions.

-78% of aided (players who were receiving athletic scholarships prior to transferring) transfers in 2022 and 90% in 2023, received aid at their new institutions.

The Women's College Hockey Pipeline - Post #148 Is Now LIVE! In today's post I discuss the transfer portal and the date for players to enter has past and what comes next as well as some of the transfer numbers since 2020.

      • The following is an attempt at sarcasm...I hope it is taken as such.

Evidently the tunnelers have 2 transfers from Vermont...Mlynkova and Parkkonen. But we all know they are just Muzzinator rejects...They probably wanted to go the slOwSU route, but either were outright rejected or told there just wasn't room for them. It's too bad for them as they could have gone to the land of unicorns and rainbows where all players are magically transformed into the bestest players ever. Instead now they get, at best, their second choice and will likely regress as players.

        • Mlynkova in the wcha will be fun to watch. A point a game player or very close for her entire career, 4 world championships under her belt, direct experience helping Czechia evolve as a program, and doesn’t wither in big games. I’d describe her as creative and tough, in the way she plays.

One of the criticisms of Frost has been he’s playing Murphy too much. Not sure if that’s true or false, but here is some help nonetheless. Add in the BC girl whose name I can never remember, Chloe P? And these guys are pretty stacked for next year.

I’ve been trying to imagine the next several years in womens hockey, and it’s hard because you never know what thing will happen. Example - imagine if Barnes didn’t get pulled from BC in fall 2017? Imagine if Canada didn’t snub the reigning Patty Kaz winner for the 2018 Four Nations? If UND and Rmu didn’t get cut and pour talent into other programs? Could things have been different?

Ultimately maybe coaches need to be agile regardless of what happens and perhaps that was a shortcoming of Minn the past few years. Or not. Getting Mlynkova feels like a statement for sure, though.

Wisconsin and OSU flexed when they scooped up UND and RMU talent, won big portal moves over the years, and Wisconsin hosting the U18s on short notice was wild.

It does feel like a new era is coming in so many ways particularly because of the stature of the defender that Minn got, along with it being the last year of 5th years, and no looming centralization.

Following the lead.........At least their 3rd choice, word on the street is St. Thomas and Mankato also turned them down in addition to that other team. They aren't good enough to be considered by UW.

Thanks Lindsay, for info on Mlynkova to those of us who have not seen much of her...

Frost definitely leaned on Murphy as there wasn't as much talent on last year's roster.

For the record: I would have realized it was sarcasm, even without the 'warning'.

                  :-)

                  • Looks like Frosty and MJ have won the portal so far. Mlynkova and O'Brien were the top 2 players available.

True. I suppose I could have specified a certain fan base in the disclaimer...

The thing is, deep down, you are well aware that the muzzinator wins the portal each and every time. You're just messing with them now.

I don't think "retaining your own player who never entered the portal" counts as a portal victory, whatever scoreboard that is.

Aren't all players really in the portal? How else do players get signed before they are in the portal?
