  • Why can't every D1 men's program have a women's?

I would like to know opinions why every school with a D1 men's hockey program can't have a women's program.
I know most might say cost but if facilities can be shared costs can be managed.
Title IX doesn't mandate that a women's team must be formed if there's a men's team but the spirit and intent of that legislation should motivate more schools to make it happen don't you think?

Rumor has it that women's hockey was not originally in the plans for Penn State when Pegula arena was built. They would have had to add another sport for Title IX compliance, likely rowing given that we already have women's teams in most other D1 sports. I'm very glad that the the "powers that be" were persuaded that if you have men's hockey there's no reason not to have women's. From a Big Ten perspective, I am disappointed that Michigan & Michigan State don't have women's hockey teams. On the flip side, Syracuse actually added women's hockey for Title IX reasons but doesn't have a men's team.

I've commented on them in other threads. MSU could have put them in the he old arena, Demonstration Hall but has since converted it to the band's use. They also did a multi million dollar upgrade to Munn but made no provision for a women's team which I think is inexcusable. With the massive Big Ten profit sharing they can afford it. Our coach says because of it her program is very well funded and we have as many sports as anybody to share the wealth with plenty to go around. Michigan's current president who came on board last October is looking into the possibility of starting a women's program.
