  • 2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

Just getting a 2023-24 thread up and running, since the 2022-23 season is over.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It will be interesting to see if Jeff Kampersal grabs anyone from the transfer portal for next season. According to collegecommitments.com, Penn State only has two defenders and one forward coming next season. Gone are defenders Rene Gangarosa, Izzy Heminger, and Mallory Uihlein, so the defense will have their work cut out for them, with only four left on the roster before this incoming freshman pair.

The offense is good and returns all but grad transfers Eleri MacKay and Courtney Correia, but those two really made a mark in their year at Penn State.

Overall, the biggest change will be a defense without Gangarosa, Heminger, and Uihlein.

Yes, I agree with all your thoughts above. There are still a ton of girls in the portal and I am hoping that other players are either attracted by the success of Mackay and Correia in their one year at PSU or the amount of playing time that will be available with Gangarosa, Heminger and Uihlien moving on. Penn State is not the top destination for transfers, yet! I was kind of surprised that Bilka did not want to play with Janecke and Zanon. I really hope someone on PSU is doing their homework on getting someone(s) that can keep the momentum going.

Penn State's Tessa Janecke and Wisconsin's Caroline Harvey are the USCHO Co-Rookies of the Year: https://www.uscho.com/2023/03/30/wom...s-of-the-year/

Tessa Janecke was named to the U.S. Women's National Team (again), this time for the 2023 IIHF Women's Worlds April 5-16: https://twitter.com/usahockey/status...50657577857025

Nice for the Nittany Lions -- she seems to be the youngest player to make the USA roster!

Didn't Newkirk play with Barnes while at BC? One would have hoped that would have had some influence in consideration of PSU as an option. Penn State hasn't announced any incoming transfers publicly, but hopeful they land some talent as it seems the blue chip players have all landed elsewhere.

Yes, Newkirk played with Barnes at BC and I had similar hopes! Last year PSU announced their incoming transfers in June so hopefully there will be some good news on the transfer front. I think there's room for transfer players for at least one forward and one defender based on who graduated and announced incoming freshman.

Barnes would have been nice (she sure gave up a lot of breakaways against PSU though), but Bilka would have been nicer. I also thought Coomey might end up back at BU. There are a couple of leading scorers from Ivies that might translate like Correia did. There are some nice players from Syracuse, Maine and St Lawrence and Kelsey King from Minn State and etc. I just hope the evaluation of talent is as good as it was last year, because Mackay and Correia really came in and helped.

On another note Madsen scored in the championship game for the whitecaps. I noticed Brennerman played in five games and another PSU alum, Chantal Burke, played in 1. There is still no Heising sighting though.

Tessa Janecke scored her first goal as a member of the U.S. national team in an international game, which led to this "full circle" tweet (scroll down under the picture to see the video, too):

Colgate defender Maggie Maceachern has transfered to Penn State for her grad year: https://twitter.com/PennStateWHKY/st...19022909353986

Any scoop on her from Colgate fans?

(edit to add: her brother played for Penn State)

Top 4 Def. More defensive than offensive but will stick some offense in from time to time. Physical and smart. Good skater and good leader. Will improve your team for sure.

Thanks for that - it sounds like just what Penn State needs going into next season, having lost three defenders to graduation. Maceachern shouldn't have to worry about offensive play.

That's a nice pick up. Janecke's goal was a beauty.

Tessa Janecke had two goals today against Czechia - not bad for the youngest player on the team. She's very opportunistic in front of the net...in other words, she gets herself in good spots for greasy rebound goals.
