  • This is an ambitious schedule, hopefully the team remains cohesive. The CHA will be a dogfight. The Byrnes girl had such a hot start to her collegiate career and why not circle back to see if the magic can happen again.

      • After one, it's 0-0 at Colgate. Both teams took one penalty, and Penn State leads the shots on goal by 11-4. It took over half the period before Colgate got its first shot on goal. Penn State is swarming, so hopefully they can keep up the pressure through the rest of the game.

        • After two, it's 2-1 Colgate. Each team took two penalties - one was for Janecke taking a shot at the end of the period after the buzzer sounded. Penn State leads the shots on goal 20-18. Maggie MacEachern scored the Penn State goal on her old Colgate ice.

          • Colgate sweeps Penn State by a score of 3-2. No idea about stats, because for the second game in a row the stats person was asleep.

Not sure the stats person is asleep, but change is not always better. The new stats live is not better than the old stats live A competitive game for sure. Colgate used to e free to watch too, just like PSU used to be, but the schools seem to be bent on getting any revenue stream instead of taking the long view, which is more exposure is better than less exposure. The real question is does the AD control every sport and if so perhaps the AD enters into an agreement for every sport whether you want to go that way or not.

The undisciplined penalties continue to haunt. Why shoot the puck well after the horn sounds...that was the difference between a tie and a loss. Brooks had a nice goal by driving the net hard, but we're going to need to get some scoring from our forwards....after 6 games our D are outscoring the forwards and that's not a good recipe. I like Stecker on D, she adds some good hockey IQ.

                • Anybody want to take a shot at early takeaways so far? Here are a couple...

Penn State is really missing the five out of the six top scorers gone from last season. It's good to see Alyssa Machado scoring...she's always been a worker and a grinder....but Tessa Janecke hasn't scored a goal yet in six games on the books. The team hustles, they're physical, and they battle on the boards, as always, but the lack of scoring is a little scary. Machado and Brianna Brooks are the only forwards on the entire roster with a goal so far...in six games.

Penalties are part of the game, but dumb penalties have to stop. Speaking of Janecke again, she already has five regular penalties and a five-minute major, in the first six games, to go with her zero goals. A couple of those came at really bad times and resulted in costly goals given up. Penn State can't afford to be down a player as often as they are when even-strength goals already aren't coming.

I guess it's too early to really grab onto much of anything yet, and they did go against the #3 and #5 teams, but what does anyone else see so far?

                  • The games have been close except for one. It's a game of inches. This is a tough schedule.

                    • Tessa Janecke has been named to the U.S. national team again, this time for the Rivalry series in November: https://teamusa.usahockey.com/news_article/show/1287576

                      • Great news for Penn State player Tessa Janecke. I looked for Zanon and OSU did not change her luck with USA hockey.

                        • After one, it's Cornell up 2-1 on Penn State. Penn State leads the shots on goal 9-7, and Cornell took the only penalty with .2 seconds left, so Penn State will start the second period on the power play. Despite the score, Penn State is in this one, and they typically settle down after a first period, so this could be a good one.

                          • Penn State had two powerplays early in the second and didn't get a single shot on goal...ugh. Cornell now leads 3-1 halfway through, and I have to leave, so I'll watch the rest when I get home later tonight.

                            • Penn State is having a tough go to the start of the year. Hopefully, tomorrow the coaches can get this going right.

                              • I picked through a replay of last night's game at Cornell, and wow...I don't know what to say. Penn State had three powerplay chances and didn't get a single shot on goal in any of them - forget powerplay goals, they didn't even get a powerplay shot the whole night! In the second period, they got a grand total of one shot on goal for the entire period...one shot on goal...that's just crazy. I didn't watch the complete replay, but I watched enough of it to see that Penn State is in for a long season if they don't get on track, and soon. Josie Bothun can only do so much to keep them in a game if nobody is scoring for Penn State, and even her numbers aren't looking exactly stellar.

The starting lines were yet another mix, and Kampersal needs to settle on pairings so they can work on some chemistry. They've got seven games on the books...surely he's seen enough mix 'n match to know who works best with whom.
