              • The NCAA has reduced the window to enter the portal from 60 to 45 days.

While the Fall and Spring sports have their windows split into two periods (one 30 days and one 15 days), for winter sports the window to enter the portal is 45 consecutive days starting 7 days after championship selection.

I saw that but what do you think is really the goal the NCAA is trying to achieve with this change?

It's entirely a kneejerk response to constant coach complaints about how long the uncertainty lasted about players entering the portal. After the 4,000th coach across all the sports went "But how I am going to know how to build my teeeeeeeam....." the NCAA went "Fine! 45 Days! Go away!" and called it a day.

                    • This is good but should even be shorter. The ripple effect the portal has on all players, especially high school player being recruited, is not healthy. A lot of high school players are left in limbo while 'portal season' works its way through. If a players is unhappy in their current program, they should know pretty quickly if they want to leave at the end of the season. There is already exceptions in place for things like coaching changes so there is no real need to have it be more than two weeks in my opinion. It is not all about the current players but future ones as well.

                        Yes.

The thing we don't know is if you are a player with no intention of leaving where you are but another coach is interested in you and you contacted under the table and told, "Hey, I like your game. Would you ever consider playing at XXX?" That person may need 45 days to figure out if the grass is greener or not. Of course this probably NEVER happens.

                        • I think it's probably still too long. Studies show the majority of student athletes who enter the portal do so within the first week of the portal opening. Also, keep in mind the athlete doesn't need to complete the transfer process within that 45 day window; it's simply the time when they can declare personal "free agency" and be in contact with coaches from other schools without having to complete the process.

                          • I've heard comments before on Forum that the Transfer Portal exploded with the COVID eligibility extension but I'm of the opinion it has taken on a life of it's own and will still be going like gangbusters even after the reduced window and the 5th years are gone. Even the new Dr.Pepper commercial takes a jab that the Transfer Portal is out of control.

You say this like it's a free test of the waters. Once a player enters the portal the school they are currently at is free to reduce or eliminate their scholarship as early as the next term. There is risk for the players unless they're already having their scholarship reduced/eliminated (though in that case they can enter the portal at any time).

                              • At this is the ripple-effect problem to high school students being recruited. How many are left in limbo because a coach does not know how many scholarships to work with? I'm not trying to defend the coaches here but the longer there is uncertainty with the current roster and potential players entering the portal, the more it pushes to the high school players who may need to find alternatives. In trying to give 'more power to the players' it actually has placed a lot of anxiety and uncertainty on the players coming up, and the coaches are not totally to blame this time
