Is this a worrisome score PSU fans?

Advantage PSU for the weekend in getting a game in ahead of this weekend.

I was wondering if we were ever going to find out how that game went, since Penn State hasn't said a word about it and there was zero live coverage from either team, and not even a postgame box score. I can't remember that ever happening, even with an exhibition game.

I don't know if anyone would say it's a worrisome result, being an exhibition, but I sure would've expected Penn State to put up more goals than that. There's no telling what Jeff Kampersal was doing throughout the game, though. That's why I would've paid to watch it, just to have some context beyond a final score.

The 2022-23 CHA preseason coaches poll was released today, and Penn State was the unanimous choice for the top spot this season. Penn State players who also received individual votes:

CHA preseason Rookie of the Year: Tessa Janecke
-- Tessa Janecke comes to Penn State with at least as much hype as Kiara Zanon had coming into her freshman season, if not more. Janecke is a big load of potential, so it's going to be fun to see how she blends into the Penn State system and how soon she can find her groove in the physical play of the CHA. She had great showings this year at both the U18 Worlds and the U22/Collegiate tournament for Team USA.

First all, let’s get excited for the talent of the freshman class, grad students, and returning players. Secondly, I am going to venture that Janecke is not in the right place at the right time, she is a heads up player who can anticipate and positions herself to finish the play. How about the game tying goal in the 3rd period of the 1st game? Based on her play in the games and the commentary, especially in last nights game, is one of the fastest and most physical players on the ice. Time will tell. Glad she’s on our team. Zanon played great as well, positions well on the penalty kills and stays heads up in the offensive zone. I think PSU will be in good shape this year.

Tessa Janecke and Kiara Zanon both scored in tonight's U22/Collegiate 4-1 win against Canada. What was interesting from a Penn State perspective, having Penn State associate head coach Allison Coomey behind the bench, is that she has Janecke and Zanon on different lines. This series would've been a great opportunity to play them together if that was also going to be the plan for them at Penn State, so I'm guessing they're not going to be linemates.

Tessa Janecke doesn't look like the speediest skater, or all that tricky, but she seems to be in the right place at the right time, she's physical on the boards, and she has a really good shot. She looks like a playmaker, and she looks ready for D-1 - this series, playing among and against older and more experienced players, is a great chance to see that.

I like the new CHA format. Emphasis is place on regular season. What does the CHA look like compared to WCHA, ECAC, and Hockey East?

I hope so. I like a good upset every now and then, but the previous system put little importance in the regular season results.
Note that the format changed on the Men's Atlantic Hockey side as well. On the AHA side, teams 9, 10, and 11 won't make playoffs. They'll have best of 3 quarterfinals, best of 3 semifinals, and a single championship game.

2023 CHA Postseason
The 2023 CHA Postseason will open with a pair of best-of-three semifinal series with the No. 1 seed hosting the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed hosting the No. 3 seed Feb. 24-26.

The CHA postseason will conclude the weekend of March 3-4 when the two semifinal winners meet at the home of the highest-seeded semifinal winner for one game to determine CHA’s 2023 postseason champion. Date and time for the championship game that weekend are to be determined.

UW will have a freshmen laden team with Olympic returnees and an unproven starting goalie, so a lot of turnover and uncertainty on the team and not a lot a time to gel before a tough road series. Maybe PSU can get a win and a big PWR boost before the UW machine gets rolling, and it will.

Early scouting report for Penn State: too early to tell, but a lot of roster changes.

Assuming everyone in the transfer portal is out (or doesn't find a new home elsewhere, and gets doghoused here for entering the portal), Penn State will be down seven of last season's forwards. They do have two incoming freshman forwards, according to collegecommitments.com, and two grad transfer forwards. They have two incoming freshman defenders, too. Thankfully, Josie Bothun will still be between the pipes for Penn State.

The biggest loss at forward is Natalie Heising, who finished her fifth year of eligibility last season. Forwards who also graduated, but entered the transfer portal, are Amy Dobson (another big loss) and Anna Promersberger. The other forward transfers are Rachel Weiss, Jess Ciarrocchi, Carrie Byrnes, and Mikayla Lantto.

The bright spot of incoming freshmen is obviously forward Tessa Janecke, who just played so well for Team USA in the IIHF U18 tournament. She's absolutely a top line player, and she will have Kiara Zanon up there with her, and probably Alyssa Machado. After that, the rest of the offensive lines are anyone's guess.

The two incoming grad transfer forwards are Courtney Correia from Boston University and Eleri MacKay from Colgate.

Unless there are some late surprises, that makes eleven forwards for the 2022-23 team - seven returners, and four new (or grad transfer) forwards. The defense has five returning, and two new additions.

Penn State has a single exhibition game against RIT before starting the season at home against Wisconsin, so that's the last shot to see who meshes with who this season.
