Mercyhurst is definitely not a cupcake . I listened to their coach when talking about Bouchard and he says they are getting better at the right time.

Zed to add to what you said above, two years ago Penn State had a winning record ooc, but struggled in Conference which suggests CHA is not as weak as voters think. Last year Penn State’s out of conference record was just under .500. This year they seem to be better so if they played an out of conference record we can reasonably estimate it would be a winning record. lots of great comments here in this thread to think about. I have to remind myself, it’s not like they are not ranked at all, so at least voters have them in the mix.

Hurst Penn State series should be a great one this weekend. Hurst is going to be so motivated down the stretch, with all the post season happening in Erie. What with all the polls talk I have my eye on the Colgate Quinnipiac series too.

Ha. Only semi rhetorical so thank you. Great weekend for Zumwinkle.

There are a lot of good points being made about the polls. I think Penn State should definitely be ranked higher, and I'd love to hear why they aren't, beyond the standard "well, they're CHA". So what? Mercyhurst and Robert Morris are CHA, too, and one or the other is usually ranked every season. I wish this Penn State team had the schedule of some teams that are ranked above them. Look at Northeastern's schedule: Maine, New Hampshire, Merrimack, Holy Cross. That's 10 of their 17 wins this season (New Hampshire also took them to OT, and ended in a tie as well). Three more were against Providence. That's 13 of their 17 wins, against teams I think Penn State would beat, too.

I think the voters have been voting for the same handful of teams for so long that they don't know how to add a new team into their thinking. That's understandable. Penn State could be having a "one off" kind of season that they can't repeat. I don't believe that for a second, but voters might think so. So, like Lindsay said, it will be up to CHA teams next season (if it's back to a normal season) to take care of business with non-conference games. It's going to take some time and consistency for Penn State to be in the mix on the national level. For this season, though, they're better than #8.

I think Penn State could be rated a little higher, maybe 6th or 7th.

If Hurst beats Penn State once or twice this weekend, I hope the voters don’t respond by dropping the CHA altogether from the polls. The best in the CHA really do need to take this personally and step it up out of Conference next year. Definitely some decent teams in the CHA and Penn State doing the job on the perennial best in the league and a tie against LU it’s biggest misstep is impressive. Didn’t Cornell tie Union last year? It happens. Every league has absurd blowouts in it, how many points did Zumwinkle alone get against Bemidji this weekend? ECAC is missing 2 maybe 3 of its best teams this year and yet the voters still don’t want to respect Penn State for having only 1 loss to date. A few years ago how high did the voters let Boston College get in the rankings despite no or very few wins against ranked teams? Pretty high if I recall. Sometimes you gotta use your gut and Penn State’s consistency is impressive. They should be higher than 8.

Agree that voters are waiting. I don't think that they are impressed by the CHA. Beating up on RIT and Lindenwood isn't going to give you much of a bump. Providence was in the top 10 and Colgate has been splitting with Clarkson which is a very strong team. And I suspect that the voters believe that HEA and ECAC are tougher conferences than CHA. Just my guesses. Its tough to move up because there are no OOC games to see how you really stand.

    Rankings mean nothing...
Really the first successful season in team history.
    So it is understandable.
    Motivation for playoffs and beyond.

Very possible and would be an amazing accomplishment for the program. With both Boston College and Colgate losing at least one game in their weekend series PSU should rise to 7 at a minimum. Either way, PSU is in solid position to finish the season strong and head into the CHA tournament on a high note.

And that's a wrap for Penn State and RIT, with Penn State taking the sweep on another 5-0 game. Amy Dobson got the third period goal. RIT took two penalties and Penn State took one, with neither team scoring on the powerplay. Penn State led the shots on goal 37-12. Penn State didn't exactly take their foot off the gas pedal, but this one just felt like about a 75% effort - still good, just not crazy fast like usual. Penn State moves to 15-1-2 on the season.

Next up is the season finale with a series at Mercyhurst next Friday and Saturday.
