      • I watched the Canada Finland game the other day and look forward to watching the rematch tonight. Game was 2-1 Canada late, then they got 2 empty net goals to make it 4-1. Some thoughts:

1- the refs will once again play a role in these games. 31 penalty minutes in this game. Finland had a power play that was 5 on 3 for over a minute near the end of the game. Their coach opted to pull goalie, and it didn’t work, lucky for Canada. Gotta get goals when you can because who knows what the refs will do.

2- Canada injecting some youth into the top 2
lines. Bach Poulin Jenner was a line; Daoust Fillier Spooner was a line.

3 - The media are hyping both Fillier and on the US side, Roque as the “next ones.” Love a good narrative. Let’s see. In rivalry series times Bach was one they loved. Definitely 3 to watch.

4 - Canada’s best line from 2018 was Agosta Poulin Daoust, now completely blown up (maybe). Will we see Daoust and Poulin reunite at some point? I had thought maybe we’ll see Poulin with Fillier and Daoust. There will be more patience for Bach to get going than Jenner on the top line, I assume.

5 - Maltais was a 4th liner with nurse and Saulnier but made her presence known. Drew a penalty, scored an EN goal, confident with the puck and that crazy Ohio State work ethic.

6- On D, there was no Larocque which surprised. I don’t know if healthy scratch or hurt. Maybe coaches are comfortable that they can start her tonight and she will be good to go, since so experienced?
anyway, the D pairs were Bell and Fast, Thompson and Ambrose, Shelton and Bourbonnais. Ambrose was probably the best among them, Fast had a couple really rough plays and will need to be better.

7 - pace of the game seemed faster than the American pre tourney game but maybe I’m imagining it. Russia was pretty outclassed so hard to draw conclusions from that one. America seems to get set up and create and finish chances whereas Canada was more about forwards driving in on the rush. Again Finland and Russia don’t really compare though.

Canada out shot Finland 45 - 16. Great job by Finland Keisala and Raisanen in net. Finland seems vulnerable to blowouts with that kind of shot margin, but Canada is vulnerable to upset if they don’t finish and are on the wrong end of the refs calls. Finland hit multiple goal posts in this game.

8 - on the media coverage side the athletic has published 3 articles in the past day on the event and nhl network is so far doing a nice job. No the nhl network people don’t know women’s hockey to the extent die hards would but hockey is for everyone and I’m happy to watch the post game commentary from them nonetheless. Disappointed that Just Womens Sports has provided NOTHING about this event, not even a “hey it’s happening and on this channel.” Not sure what to make of it, but today is a day to enjoy games on tv and let things go haha.

9 - Canada’s scratches were Kristen Campbell, Larocque, Kristin O’Neill, and Laura Stacey.

        anyone else watch? Thoughts? Predictions?

Fillier lives up the street from me and went to school with my youngest, great family , great kid, great player. She's always been heads and shoulders above everyone else and has a tremendous work ethic. Look forward to her being a key part of the team for years to come.

                  • Wow that was a wild game but Canada won 5-3 over Finland.

The first period was not good, other than Fillier and we’ll leave it at that!

Then Canada played an unreal 2nd period that led to a Rattray goal and then on the next shift (for which Rattray was still on the ice screening the goalie), a Poulin goal. Rattray wasn’t on an official line which was weird but whatever, at least after she helped on those two goals she got a regular shift and I’m not sure how much Bach played after that. Canadian dominance carried the second period; shots were 22-2 at one point.

Early in the third, Ella Shelton fired one from the point, gorgeous tip by Jenner, that was also apparently tipped by the forward...I mean defender Ambrose who was screening the Finnish goalie. Her first senior team goal too I think. At this point I thought, well Canada will win 3-2.

Nope! Finland tied it shortly after, on a shot from the point that went thru a bunch of players. 3-3.

Not long after that Fillier got her first senior team goal putting Canada ahead 4-3 after a puck came into the slot on a Spooner wrap around attempt. She did get the #gwg, what a nice first tourney game moment for her.

add another canadian penalty for same late game drama, and an EN goal by Jenner and Canada got the W.

it was definitely entertaining! Player of the game for Canada was Rattray.

Very curious what Troy Ryan said to his team at the first intermission when they were down 2-0. One thing that went awry in the first was he
double shifted his top two lines in the first 2 minutes and already ended up down 1-0, then two penalties against Canada, the second of which Canada got scored on, so they were half way through the first, down 2-0 and half the forwards hadn’t even really had more than a shift yet if that. Awesome job by the Canadians fighting back in the second and seizing the win in the third.

                    • This USA roster is so fun to watch. Literally every line.

also Jesse Compher seems like she is not to be messed with. I’m scared of her and she’s only on tv.

                      • Brandli was simply phenomenal stopping 55 shots against USA! The 3 she allowed only happened when her defense let USA loose on her doorstep. The play by play people couldn't say enough about her.
I'd say barring injury Ohio State is going to have one hell of a season with her in net!

                        • Caroline Harvey, WOW! Very impressed with her for being just 18 years old. She was all over the ice. Looking forward to seeing her play in person the next 4 years at LaBahn Arena. I see a Patty Kaz in her future.

                            (No, I didn't see it)

Three goals on eleven shots.... not exactly Desbiens' finest hour!

I was rooting for my country (obviously), but IMHO, Andrea Braendli was the star of the game! Thrilled that she is a Buckeye!
