Just thinking about Canada and Patty Katz’s. In the last ten years Canadians have won 5. The 3 most recent didn’t get centralized. 4th most recent is Desbiens, she played 1 game at the 2018 Olympics despite Szabados being injured, Canada felt more comfortable with Szabados. Meanwhile US was rolling with a college kid in net. 5th most recent Canadian Patty Kaz winner is Rattray, she won it in 14 and then fell off the Canadian roster in 17 and 18 but is now back.

I look forward to hearing folks thoughts if they have any. Congrats to all who made it this far and good luck! As much as I’ll cheer for the selected players, I’m cheering for a league for the rest because this is wild- Patty Kaz winners have nowhere to play.

Schools breakdown of the 28 Canadians:

        Goalies- 2 Wisc, 1 Harvard

        D- 3 Clarkson, 2 Cornell, 1 Princeton, 1 Wisconsin, 2 UMD

        F- 1 McGill, 4 Cornell, 3 Wisconsin, 2 OSU, 2 BU, 1 Clarkson,1 Princeton, 1 Dartmouth, 1 SLU

        By league:

        1 USports
        15 ECAC
        10 WCHA
        2 HE

        6 Cornell, 6 Wisc, 4 Clarkson, 2 BU, 2 UMD, 2 OSU, 2 Princeton, 1 each at 4 remaining schools

Only 5 of 16 forwards shoot right, including some bubble players imo.

Lots of people talking about who’s not there. Watts, Gabel etc. But the girls selected for Canada’s centralization team imho is good.

I would imagine at that level there’s a depth chart of various roles at these selection camps. Scorers, playmakers, grinders, pk, etc. The ones in question that were not selected were maybe lower on the depth chart compared to others competing for that role. Just because a player lights it up with points in college; past or present doesn’t mean it’s a ‘for sure spot’ on a national team.

I’m worried about depth of scoring at forward.
I like the D and goalies, just seeing some change there adds interest. Hope to add more thoughts at a later time.

If there is a single player who I think should be there who is not, it’s Gabel.

Yes Lindsay, I was very surprised Gabel was not on that list. But there is a process and it’s probably pretty complicated for us as fans

oh for sure. I’m ready to cheer for whoever makes Team Canada. I just like chatting about it, is all. Your observation that this centralization roster is full of good hockey players is the right attitude.

There’s no question the 28 on the list are a talented bunch and Canada saying “this is our centralization roster” suggests they think they can win gold twice with this mix of players. Or, they will do what US did 4 years ago, name a centralization roster and then add to it late in the game. Anything’s possible.

Of the 16 forwards, 10 are 2018 Olympians. My guess is they will take 13 forwards. I don’t think all 10 2018 forward Olympians are slam dunks for 2022 but who knows. So Rattray, Bach, O’Neill, Fillier, Maltais, Gosling are the newcomers on forward, in terms of trying to make Olympics. Presumably 3, but possibly more will make it. I think all but Maltais and Gosling play center, although maybe on the national team some of them move to wing.

Very interested to see Gosling. SLU was 0-3 when she showed up late to the season, but she went right to work turning their season around. It is not lost on me Gosling and the Saints beat Giguere and Lonergan’s Knights 4 straight towards the end of the season .

Total fan comment but I will simply miss the fun of watching Gabel. Scores points against the US, great goal celebrations and some swagger as you’d expect from a “2 time natty freaking champ” . Watts is a wizard and I’ll miss her too. Shootouts come to mind as a spot Canada might miss her.

Excited to see Maltais. Knowing that there are people here who consider her the best player in the WCHA, certainly bodes well for Canada.

Rattray has had as good a quad as anyone in Canada vs the US, imo, and does so with less ice time than others. Has to be a strong
                candidate to make it.

Also excited to see Fillier. Numerous people are projecting her to be on the Olympic team, she obviously did great things at Princeton for one year.

Thinking about Canada’s returners, obvs Daoust and Poulin need a winger, so curious who plays with them. Daoust, Poulin and Johnson are all forwards who historically are top six and all have suffered injuries this quad. going to assume they will be healthy, but it’s a thing that comes to mind.

for the rest of the lines, I just think the US basically brings 3 lines that can score vs Canada, and Canada has to be able to do similar. Canada’s showing some boldness with these six who are trying to crack the roster. I’m hopeful they can dole out the ice time to see what people have, and spread the goal scoring over several lines. Agosta’s significant ice time is up for grabs, but will there be shuffling beyond that is a big question. August is a long ways away but the PW event in Calgary this month will be a great preview.

Wouldn't you take Gabel or Watts over Nurse or Turnbull?

I like all 4 of those players tbh. Time will tell as to the construction of the roster. I think the gold medal game was supposed to be this weekend. Instead we can watch NHL playoffs I suppose, and the Secret Dream Gap tour on Sunday and Monday.

IIHF will vote in September to decide if women’s worlds should also be played in Olympic years (at top level), as is the case on the men’s side. Would be great if that happened.

Is 4 Nations dead? Last one was 2018. 2019, 2020 cancelled, no 2021 that I’m aware of.

USA roster for Worlds. Centralization roster minus Brandt and Flanagan.

coaches are Joel Johnson, Brian Pothier, Courtney Kennedy and Alli Altmann.

25 on a roster, anyone know how many dress for a game? I’m excited to see so many new people at this level, Caroline Harvey Abbey Murphy and Lacey Eden, and Buchbinder, plus Dunne finally getting her shot. Also looking forward to seeing Britta Curl as I’m less familiar with her, she gets less fanfare than some other Wisco people.

US games will be on NHL Network.

Britta Curl will remind you of Abby Roque. She is very strong in front of the net.

And a physical side like Roque, though Roque can create better one on one than Curl can.

Thanks for the scouting report on Curl. :-)

Canada added Jessie Eldridge to their centralization roster yesterday. I am hoping everyone else is still healthy.

Eldridge is the all time points leader at Colgate, in the 160’s somewhere. Her college stats were something 27 points as a rookie, and then just had higher point totals each successive year until her senior year she put up 54.

At the PW event in Calagary she played great, one of the point leaders, including assisting Poulin’s championship winning goal.

Hearing all the noise about Curl makes me wonder if anyone here follows the IIHF U18 games. With limited play by play announcements, you have to watch the action on the ice and eventually pick up on who stands out above the crowd. Britta Curl was one of those players. We will see if she, along with the Gopher commits like Abbey Murphy and others, continue to develop their potential.
