Yep. To visibly see a profit in owning a women’s team is going to be difficult. I’ve tried running numbers, I don’t see how ticket revenue will pay the bills. If they can make the product visible, and particularly make the hockey community aware of its existence I think the sponsors will come.

The benefit to the benefactor is going to be that it’s a vanity project (does Bettman want a legacy like Stern? Maybe?), or they truly believe in equity, or they think it’s good for their brand - (sponsorship spend ROI is notoriously difficult to measure btw) or they are passionate about the sport in question. The benefit to the benefactor is undoubtedly going to be some other big picture thing not tied to a bottom line.

with the Ovi thing, I was just teasing. Of course I’d love a hockey investment but really I think it’s great he invested where his heart is. He put money in, hopefully a meaningful amount, and delivered some strong remarks about his beliefs re women’s sport. I think it’s cool he invested in a DC team. Have to believe a rising tide lifts all boats, and the last thing women’s hockey needs to do is crush the guy because he chose soccer and not hockey. Emily Kaplan’s article is below.

BTW - St Louis PWHPA event is re scheduled for this weekend. I hope they announce a streaming or broadcast partner as well.

For reasons I’ll never fathom many women’s hockey fans are big lacrosse enthusiasts, and in fact maybe you guys should look at the Professional Lacrosse League as a more promising model than any speculations centered around the NHL. With a once semi-regional, now semi-national-ish sport (our distant cousins?), based on a summer touring schedule, no home teams per se, stock options (!), the PLL is working with a new template. Still a pipe dream IMO, but an interesting one. Have a look at this:

Seems to be what the PWHPA is trying to do - hopefully it works out. If you are a player, it is the ideal situation (a player's owned league). I am not sure how well the traveling, 'tournament' style will really go over though long-term as I am not sure how you build team/brand loyalty with a fan base but it seems the lacrosse folks are able to make it work so maybe it is a model.

The NWHL have sold the CT Whale to a group led by Tobin Kelly, a Needham, MA-based executive (specializing in M&A) who also is the founder of both ARC Hockey (equipment and apparel) and the New Hampshire Youth Pond Hockey Festival.

This is great news for the NW. Leaves them owning 3 teams - Buffalo, Minnesota, and Riveters. I’m a little surprised Connecticut sold out of the 4 previously available as it seems like it was the team that struggled the most in terms of ticket sales, finding a rink, attracting talent.

Knight7, thanks for sharing. Glad those games will be streamed/broadcast. Looking forward to seeing Nicole Hensley especially play back in St Louis.

Well I think this article pretty much says the NHL will not back a women's league anytime soon:

                    https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/arti...work-together/

At best, if the two women's leagues can find a path to unity, they NHL might 'participate' in some way.

Yes. Credit to Marisa Ingemi, she said this nonstop even in the face of insiders and high up PW people saying the NHL was going to do something. I’m glad Marek wrote this, nonetheless. gives some clarity, at a time when players deserve it more than ever.

I see Paul Mara, coach of the Pride is recruiting on Twitter, or delivering wisdom or perhaps just an opinion, however you want to look at it. I think NW can start signing certain people on May 15th. Will be an interesting off season.

but first: We can watch hockey this weekend!

Tomorrows game is at 1 pm and streams online.

I wonder what the max is on these contracts. With the new salary cap, its conceivable the max is higher than the $25k max in year 1. Making a max contract, living in Canada getting USD to play for the Six doesn’t sound too bad.

Is there anyone who understands the law on the board who might be able to provide insight as to how their call for two competitive leagues to merge doesn't violate anti-trust legislation in some way? It doesn't seem kosher how they can openly call for a monopoly to be formed the way they have in this statement.

PW game is 1-1 with 5 mins left in the second. Goal by Cameranesi from Pannek for adidas. Goal by Kessel from Scamurra for WSF.

Lindenwood assistant coach Kristie Kehoe is doing doing the color and doing a great job. Nice looking rink!
