Whew...Penn State takes the win 1-0 on a beautiful breakaway goal in OT from Natalie Heising. Shots on goal were 38-32 for Penn State, and Penn State took 3 penalties to Syracuse's 2. Josie Bothun was spectacular in net and made some highlight reel saves. Arielle DeSmet for Syracuse had an equally great game in net. There were so many chances in this game for Penn State, and they really stayed on the gas tonight. Syracuse has some very fast skaters, too, but Penn State played a smothering defensive game. Tomorrow should be more of the same, and it was good hockey all night.

After three periods, it's still scoreless, so off we go to 3-on-3 OT...ugh.

After two, it's still scoreless at Syracuse. That period was a lot better for Syracuse, but Penn State had some golden chances they just couldn't finish. Penalties are 1-1, and shots on goal are 29-21 for Penn State. Syracuse switched goalies for the second period, sitting Allison Small and putting in Arielle DeSmet, the former Robert Morris goalie.

After one period at Syracuse, it's 0-0. CuseTV didn't start the stream until half the period was over, so no idea how the first half went, but the second half of the period was all Penn State. Penn State leads the shots on goal by 19-6, and Syracuse has taken the only penalty late in the period. Penn State will start the second with about 1:45 of a powerplay chance.

Here is tonight's lineup for Penn State - Olivia Wallin is still not playing, so I hope her recovery is going well.

Absolutely, and I like the idea of a big forward who can either score her own goals or set up her linemates for a goal. She's going to be fun to watch.

Here is a link to to a Youtube site for Chaska-Chanhassen which has scoring highlights and game action from their first contest. It is curious that in the highlight video they mistake her as #13

The Daily Collegian on Penn State's prep for the weekend series at Syracuse:

I didn't even realize Penn State and Syracuse are currently tied for first in the CHA, so there's more incentive for Penn State to come out blazing tomorrow.

Penn State heads to Syracuse for a Friday-Saturday series this weekend. Both games will be streamed free on CuseTV.

    Video (Friday, 7:00 Eastern): https://cuse.com/watch/?Live=5625&type=Live

    Video (Saturday, 3:00 Eastern): https://cuse.com/watch/?Live=5626&type=Live

Penn State has a bad taste in their mouth over losing to Syracuse in the CHA tournament last season. If they put together two 60-minute games, come out flying and play the way they've been playing, I think Penn State is going to get the payback they're so hungry for.

The only real surprises for Syracuse's season so far are a loss to RPI, a loss to Lindenwood, and RIT taking them to overtime in their most recent series. The RIT overtime is the biggest surprise, but it just shows that no game is a sure bet before it's played.

Penn State looks to have fixed its early-season woes and gotten on track now, and I think this series with Syracuse has been circled on their schedule since the start of the season. It's always a tough series, but that extra bit of sting from last season's CHA tournament might be what lifts Penn State over Syracuse...it's certainly the motivation Penn State is bringing to Syracuse this weekend.

It should be some really good hockey - and it's streaming for free.

Just noticed that Jenna Brenneman is listed as goalie on Whitecaps. Katie Rankin is on McGill.

And ...Mercy Hurst beat and tied St Lawrence. Things are very interesting this year.
