The Penn State women's hockey season starts tomorrow night - man, it feels good to say that! This offseason has felt like it took three offseasons to get through. According to the Penn State women's hockey Twitter, they're going to hang a banner for last season's CHA regular season title...that's the first one in the rafters for the women. Here's the BTN+ link for the livestream, with game time at 7:00 (Eastern):
After the first period, St. Lawrence is up on Penn State 1-0. Penn State only managed 7 shots on goal to St. Lawrence's 2. It was probably the kind of first period of a season to be expected. The top line had some chances, but overall nothing really clicked, so we'll see if they settle down. Penn State will start the second period with 1:58 of powerplay, but the powerplay in the first showed pretty much nada. Nothing to complain about...just looked like jittery "first period of the season" hockey.
At the end of two, it's still St. Lawrence up 1-0. Penn State had more chances that period but it's still not very cohesive, so it was kind of just more of the same that period. Shots on goal are 15-7 for Penn State. I think Kiara Zanon is trying too hard to be a little too fancy, rather than making a play, and even the announcers mentioned that she's trying to do too much by herself. It's game one, and still a period to go, so we'll see how they come out for the third.
And that's a wrap - St. Lawrence beats Penn State 1-0. Shots on goal were 22-17 for Penn State. There was just nothing doing for Penn State all game, no chemistry, no cohesiveness. I know you don't get anything from the first game of the season, but I hope that's the worst they look all year. I really, really miss Jessica Adolfsson on defense.
Here are links for tonight's 7:00 game #2 against St. Lawrence. Don't forget your parking pass if you're coming to the game, and remember that the Pegula Ice Arena lot is actually called the Shields lot.
