So Sweden beats Finland, and then mails it in for the rest of the tournament? Looking at the boxscore, this looks like their Olympic team. Why bother centralizing for a year if the result is that you can't beat Russia nor give Canada U-22 anything resembling a game?

Sweden rallies to make the final a respectable 3-2 Canadian win.

EDIT: Whoops! Wasn't final yet, Sweden ties it in final seconds, Canada wins 4-3 in OT.

Sweden tied it with 11 seconds left in regulation, 6 on 3.

It would seem likely that Canada should meet the Russian in the final.
Switzerland playing without Schnelling and Marty.
In fact their lineup is missing 10 players in total.

Although the Swiss are leading 1 to 0 on a first period power play goal.

EDIT: Russia has scored two goals in the first 3:31 of the second period, and lead 2-1.
EDIT #2: Make it 3 goals in 4:14. Russia now up 3-1.

                Re: 2010 MLP Nations Cup

I stopped watching the box score so that I could get actual work done, and I missed 6 more goals in the remainder of the second period. Russia scored 5 goals in the frame and Switzerland scored four, to make the score 5-5 after two periods.

Not a good period for the goaltenders. Anna Prugova of Russia yielded 4 goals on 10 shots, and Dominique Slongo of Switzerland gave up 5 goals on 11 shots. But it does make for an intriguing game.

One period to go... Winner plays Canada for the gold, loser takes on Sweden for the bronze.

                  Re: 2010 MLP Nations Cup

The other score reporting site for this tournament is indicating that there was no scoring between Russia and Switzerland in the third period (after the wild 9-goal second period), sending the game to overtime, and that Switzerland has won with an overtime goal.

The box scores from pointstreak.com have failed, so I don't have anything to review.

I'll post details if they become available before I head out for the Univ. of Minnesota game tonight.

pointstreak.com is back up, and I have confirmation: Switzerland 6, Russia 5, OT Final. Claudia Riechsteiner netted the gamewinner for the Swiss at 2:47 of overtime, shortly after the expiration of a power play. Shots were pretty even at 36-34 in favor of the Russians. Both teams were 3-for-9 on their respective power plays in the penalty-filled contest.

Switzerland will face Canada in the gold medal contest tomorrow at 8 p.m. local time, 2 p.m. Eastern, 1 p.m. Central. Sweden will get another crack at Russia in the bronze medal match at 10 a.m. local, 4 a.m. ET, 3 a.m. CT.

Final scores from the final day of the MLP Nations Cup:

5th place game - Finland 4, Germany 0 on a lopsided 45 to 8 shot comparison. Michelle Karvinen scored twice for the Finns, while Noora R├Ąty needed to make only the 8 saves in net for the shutout victory. Viona Harrer and Jennifer Harss combined for 41 saves for the Germans.

Bronze Medal Game - Sweden 5, Russia 3 - Sweden avenges their round-robin loss to the Russians. Maria Rooth scores both the eventual gamewinning 4th goal and the insurance 5th goal for the Swedes.

Gold Medal Game - Canada 9, Switzerland 0 - The rematch of what was a one-sided round robin game turned out to be even more-so the second time around. Natalie Spooner and Jessica Wong each score two goals for the Canadians, while Jennifer Wakefield and Vicki Bendus each have a goal and two assists. Christina Kessler had 15 saves for the shutout. Dominique Slongo and Sophie Celine Anthamatten combined for 38 saves for the Swiss.

This has to extremely discouraging for the other countries in this tournament, getting totally dominated in the Gold Medal Game, by what is essentially Canada's "junior varsity" team, heading into the Olympics.

The Swiss were without Julia Marty and Florence Schelling, both of whom are difference makers who will be with the team in Vancouver.
