RPI find themselves in an interesting situation for this weekend. They are essentially playing 2 exhibition games this weekend because they cannot move up in the standings and they cannot drop.

The only real issue is they may be playing their firts round playoff opponent in Cornell.

It is an opportunity to rest players with minor injuries, give your goalie a rest (based upon the weekend results she might need one) or just plain try something new.

If it doesn't work this weekend you can always go back to what you were doing before.

                Excellent!

Looking over the other members of the three teams makes one realize why U of Minn is unbeaten this year and may be unbeaten for a few years to come: I count at least 9 of these 18 players have committed to the Gophers for either 2013-14 or the following year. Other Minnesota or ND teams picked up most of the rest. Quinnipiac and RPI seem to be the only ECAC teams that succeeded in luring one of them east.

I'm surprised that the Albany metro area doesn't produce a few more women's college players. The only ones I can remember playing D1 for RPI were Laura Gersten and Ashley Gaylord both from the Troy Albany Ice Cats.

Since it's the seniors last home weekend, do you really believe that they want to do that?

I think that you are correct that those are the only two since RPI became D-I. Than again, there haven't been many on the men's team since then either. Tyler Eaves is the only one whom I can recall.

I think that the Albany area does produce its share of Division 1 players (proportionate to the number of girls playing hockey). They just don't stay in the area for high school hockey (because there isn't enough competition) or go to RPI. For instance, Jordan Juron (Assabet Valley/Middlesex School to Boston University) and Courtney Burke (Shattuck St. Marys/USA U-18 to University of Wisconsin) are freshman, both from Albany, and were pretty highly sought after recruits last year. RPI has the recruiting limitation that it is primarily an engineering and business school. If you don't have an academic interest in these areas than you probably aren't going to be very interested in going to RPI.

Did some quick research. This is data from the recruit classes of 05-06 to 12-13 inclusive:

Breakdown of the 66 D1 recruits from NY State over that period based on home town region:
(Not always same region where players played)

New York......... 14 (Includes Long Island, where many of these recruits hail from)
Syracuse......... 14 (Half of these were from the 05-07 time frame, when Syracuse had a dominant club team)
                        Rochester........ 10
                        Buffalo............ 09
                        Albany............ 08
                        North Country.. 06
                        Binghampton... 05
                        ===============
                        Totals............ 66

As you can see good distribution accross the state, with NYC and Syracuse Area the biggest suppliers.

The 8 recruits from the Albany Area over that time period:

This seems pretty consistent with what I was saying. MA produces 5-10 Division 1 players per year on average and probably has at least 5-10X as many girls players as Albany area. So 1 per year average for Albany (albeit it seems to go in spurts) seems just about right.

BTW - you have eitehr way too much data, way too much time, or both!!!

Case of way too much data maybe. Have a spreadsheet with all the recruit data built up over time. Update it once a year, once the recruit class is complete. Next update would be this summer to add the 13-14 incoming class.

With spreadsheet in hand, easy to pull the data.

For example, since you were discussion MA vs NY...Here is the D1 recruit data over that time frame for those two states:
                            Year.. ... MA ... NY
                            05-06 ... 12 ... 06
                            06-07 ... 14 ... 12
                            07-08 ... 14 ... 03
                            08-09 ... 19 ... 09
                            09-10 ... 19 ... 10
                            10-11 ... 13 ... 04
                            11-12 ... 17 ... 07
                            12-13 ... 10 ... 17

Note that the MA numbers are more in the 10-15 per year range, as opposed to the 5-10 number you mentioned. Last years class was the first time ever that a higher number of D1 recruits hailed from NY compared to MA.

Note that many NY based players play prep hockey in New England. 14 of the 17 recruits that had NY as their listed home town, played their hockey elsewhere, 4 in Ontario (OHA and PWHL), 2 at SSM, 1 at NAHA, 1 at Boston, 1 at LC, and 5 for various NE prep schools. The three that played in state were one each at NSA, Buffalo and Rochester.

That is in sharp contrast that with the 06-07 year, the last time there was a recruit class over 10 from NY. At that time 11 of the 12 NY recruits played instate, mostly at club teams, 5 at Syracuse, 3 at Albany, 2 at Rochester and 1 with boys. Only one player out of state, playing at Berkshire. How times have changed. Back then teams like Syracuse had a powerhouse club team.

So with one game to go RPI can still play either Harvard,Cornell or Clarkson in the playoffs.

I don't usually report on women's recruits but this boxscore is worthy posting http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/game/game_sheet/4824707 from yesterday's Minnesota State tourney. RPI dman recruit Hannah Behounek scored a goal in the second period, but the game went on a bit longer. Longest game ever in the state tourney. http://www.startribune.com/sports/192622891.html
