The Middlebury men are at home this weekend against Tufts on Friday night and Conn College on Saturday. The Saturday game shows postponed on both institutions websites, but I did not see a reason given. Since Midd will play its first game against Tufts and then postpone the second game, that would suggest that the problem is with Conn. I wonder if they have an outbreak down there in New London.

Not surprised. The number of NHL players who have entered Covid protocol in the last week is pretty crazy.

I personally just recently recovered from a breakthrough Covid case that lasted a solid two weeks. I think I generally lay pretty low - I only work 3 days a week and am usually masked there, and I spend my free time skiing or mountain biking. No bars/restaurants, etc. (hoping to change the bar part as ski seasons ramps up .)

I’m beginning to think outbreaks in team sports will be inevitable, regardless of vaccination status. Fingers crossed we see our first D3 NCAA tournament in 3 seasons this March…

It might be a rescheduling strategy. The Panthers have already missed 4 or 5 games with limited dates to make them up. Top priority would be to make up conference games. I noticed that Midd will now play its travel partner, Williams, on Sunday. This is uncharacteristically early since the two usually play a home and home on back to back nights in Feb. This possibly could open up a weekend date or two in Feb to schedule makeups against Conn or another team.

The NESCAC has historically been one of the tougher conferences top-to-bottom, with one of the better OOC records. This year, albeit only a month in, the NESCAC sports the worst OOC record (even worse than the abysmal NE10)!? Is this an aberration, a trend or something not readily discernable from afar??

I think we'll be hearing more such announcements, unfortunately.

That’s what I surmise, but as of now, I don’t see anybody else cancelling, yet. Midd’s game’s beginning the new year are still on. Ironically, similar to what happened at Thanksgiving, they are hosting a tournament for the New Year. We’ll see if all those games get canceled or they go on with or without Middlebury’s participation.

You'd think so, right? Yet by their own admission in the below link of their announcement, they are 99% vaccinated. Go figure:

My daughter's school is at 99% and they're still having an outbreak. That's happening lots of places. They advantage they have is they will likely get less ill from it. Boosters are looking like a necessity.

That was nice to watch the Panthers have a game with the Purple Knights with a 5-1 win. That seems to have energized the team. The Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament was canceled, which was two more NESCAC teams not playing. With all the cancellations and rescheduling this seems to be a really challenging season for everyone.

I watched this game and the next two after it. While it was nice to see the Panthers score some goals, they were against St Mikes, a D2 school, so they don’t count for much except for the benefit of getting a W. They don’t count in any of the D3 metrics. There are problems. Like two years ago, they take a ton of penalties. Even against St Mikes, they had about 10 with a couple of lengthy 5 v 3’s against them. Fortunately, their penalty kill is pretty good or St Mikes PP pretty bad and they were able to kill most of them off. They weren’t so lucky against #5 Hobart where they gave up a similar amount of penalties and the 1-4 score reflected it. Yesterday, they faced Bowdoin on the road and lost 0-1 in OT. The goaltending in this one by Horoho and for that matter, Bowdoin’s Kozic, was outstanding, but they just couldn’t score. They did take fewer penalties, though. Midd was out shot 40-24, but I think they found a goaltender in Horoho. So they scored 5 goals against a suspect, St Mike’s team and collectively 1 goal against Hobart and Bowdoin. Without a scoring touch, Midd better stay out of the penalty box.

Great game of Colby vs #9 Endicott. The two were an evenly matched pair, with the edge to Colby for their ability to score.
