if you're referring to the Genny goalie, I completely agree.

The lone even strength goal was a pin-ball job, and UC had many more Grade-A shots than did Geneseo, but Petizian was fantastic all game long. That one guy pretty much won the game all by himself.

"That's hockey", as a wise man once said.

Yeah, I didn't see anything untoward there either, but we all know about D-3 refs....

      • Looking at the first plausible box score available, Genny had 11 SOG for the entire game prior to the 2 ENG's.

It (was) all about the goalie.

Wouldn't mind seeing a rematch, as long as Petizian has a plane to catch that night.

        • I’d like to talk to someone that sits down by the locker room and see what they have to say about the goalie interference call. I was sitting way down in section 219 and couldn’t tell either way. Game of inches, Utica had a couple of chances just couldn’t get the puck across the goal line. Geneseo was packing the area in front of the net, made it hard to get good shots on net or no angles. Geneseo was laying out blocking most or all shots at the end.

          • Big in-conference win for UC. Could easily have gone either way.

Wilkes is a dangerous team, make no mistake. The first team to outshoot UC in years. (27-26, but still...)

Strange kin people, watch out for Wilkes down the road.

Interesting. I wonder why the HarborCenter "gave it up." From what I heard, they offered a lot to get the tournament a few years ago away from Rochester.

This a bit of a head-scratcher, for sure. Even if RIT makes it there, you'll be able to hear a pin drop...

Esche has done a ton for Utica's local hockey scene, but Hell, The Aud was empty for the D-3 FF a few years back. This is only a "hockey town" when we have a dog in the hunt. No way it's going to be anywhere near full for the AHA.

Perhaps there's enough guaranteed money involved to ensure a break-even situation? (I doubt that seriously, but Esche has pulled rabbits out of his hat before.)

Exactly my thinking. Even when RIT was in it when it was in Rochester, the attendance was very disappointing. At least in the HarborCenter, the capacity was smallish, so a small crowd would look "good." Sure, some will travel to Utica when their team is in it, but no more wherever it is held, and it's never drawn well anywhere.

Anyway, this is more of a D1 discussion. I'll give this thread back to the Pioneers fans. :-)

I think there is more to the story here if you know what I mean

Do tell. I can't imagine the angle on this one.

I don't see the AHA tournament drawing crowds ANYWHERE.

Hell, none of those teams draw in their own barns, never mind a rink hours away from all of them.

There have been Utica to D1 talk for years.

It has picked up recently and then they announce this? Makes you think

                          • Some time ago rumors were out their of a possible jump to D1, not sure if that is the case or not here. I personally hope not but, one never knows.

You can't go D-1 in just a single sport anymore.

St. Lawrence, Clarkson, RPI, Union, et al are D-1 only in hockey, but they were grandfathered years and years ago.

That ain't going to happen at UC any time soon, if ever.

The Utica OD printed today what you alluded to: the Harbor Center was just too big a venue for such a poorly-attended event.

Maybe if the top-4 AHA teams bring their average home attendance in the aggregate, they would pack The Aud... But there's no way in the world we're looking at that.

Still, it's worth a shot, I suppose. If Air Force makes the field, we'll go, Covid permitting. $25 will get you into all three games, and I absolutely guarantee that there'll be plenty of great seats available.
