Wrong! This has never been the case. Ever. In the history of the award. Before throwing out inaccurate information, I prefer to run things by the greatest Sports Information Department in Vermont. Middlebury SID-1 Norwich SID-0. At least it was closer than the game.

Speaking strictly from a NESCAC perspective, this is actually pretty common. I am sure other conferences have an equal number of examples over the last 15 years as well.

    2014
Colin Downey (Bowdoin) - 3rd Team All American - 2nd Team NESCAC

    2008
Mike Westerman (Bowdoin) - 2nd Team All American - 2nd Team NESCAC

    2007
Tom Maldonado (Middlebury) - 1st Team All American - 2nd Team NESCAC

    2005
Brian Phinney (Middlebury) - 1st Team All American - 2nd Team NESCAC

    2002
Ryan Constantine (Middlebury) - 2nd Team All American - 2nd Team NESCAC

Fair enough. I stand corrected. Maybe I'm crossing the women up with the men. I believe that was the case at one time with the women, if not still the case.

While less common with NESCAC student-athletes, this actually has occurred on the women's side as well. (Extremely common with ECAC West athletes)

I am searching. We've had this discussion several times and someone found it at one time that in order to be First Team All-American you must be First Team All Conference. Might have to get Norm on this one. It was in one of the AHCA CCM Selection Process form or something someone posted. I want to say it was something to do with Sundberg. Just like coach of the year you have to be Conference Coach of the Year and or make the FF....could it have changed in 10-12 years? Maybe.

I can't vouch for there being any official rule, but you're definitely right about the speculative side of things stemming from Sundberg. In 2001, Fredonia's Will Hamele was named 1st team All-SUNYAC (as well as SUNYAC Player of the Year), and then Sundberg was named 2nd team All-American. 1st teamer Tyler Euverman put up similar numbers, but appeared to be slightly outshone by Sundberg: Euverman led in GAA, but Sundberg had more shutouts and a higher save percentage, and faced significantly more shots while earning them. I don't know whether the rule was real, or conjured out of a combination of the situation and the Coach of the Year guidelines; RIT's phenomenal season could just as easily have played into Euverman's selection.

Remy you are correct. When Lawne won his All-American, we were told that he had to be First Team All Conference.

I think they allow goalies to be 2nd team, but the rest have to be First Team.

                        But I could be wrong.

I'm not sure where to put this, but I figured this might work

Last night NSN, Plattsburgh State, and the NCAA Women's Committee decided to Live Broadcast the Women's Final Four Banquet. Having followed DIII hockey for many years but never been behind the scenes at the "banquet" it was a pretty cool thing to see and hear the speeches, awards, guests and what not's of the banquet. Hopefully the Men's side can pick up this hopeful new tradition. If we're lucky maybe we can even get a camera in the smoke filled room a few weeks prior

It would be nice...the benefits of having a local school/campus supported by a local broadcast group...the freelance crew hired by Turner to do the men's games not likely to come out early, i.e. Get paid to do some banquet work, although I could be wrong. (Turner has been cutting back production costs the past several years, by using small flypacks, small crews and lowest bid talent....gone are the days of NEP trucks and crews that had Stanley Cup experience.....)

I reached out to ESPN and Turner for each the prior Frozen Fours that were held in Lake Placid offering crew, talent, facilities...to no avail. We will keep trying when the tournament returns east....
