Ron Fogarty leaves Adrian hockey program to coach Princeton

...Fogarty has the highest winning percentage among active NCAA coaches (.879), going 167-23-10 in seven seasons guiding Adrian.

“It was an honor to be considered for this position and now a privilege to be named the head coach of the Princeton hockey program,” Fogarty said in a statement. “With great enthusiasm, I look forward to building a program that will consistently compete for Ivy League and ECAC championship"
Princeton hires Ron Fogarty as new hockey coach

...Fogarty has been wildly successful as head coach of Division III Adrian College in Michigan, but he has experience as a player and an assistant at the Division I level, including inside ECAC Hockey. The 1995 Colgate graduate compiled a record of 167-23-10. That is a remarkable record considering he built the program from the ground up. Adrian has qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times and has won the conference tournament six times in seven seasons.

Fogarty previously was an assistant coach at Bowling Green, Clarkson and Colgate before taking on the task of building the Division III program at Adrian. He spent three years each at Colgate and Clarkson before four seasons at BGSU.

The Sarnia, Ontario native played center for the Red Raiders, posting 51 goals and 89 assists in 135 career games before a brief stint in the minors with the Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League.

Fogarty replaces Bob Prier who was fired earlier this offseason following three seasons at the helm. It is not yet known whether Greg Gardner and Scott Garrow will stay on as assistants. The two have done a solid job keeping in contact with recruits and keeping the program afloat during the time of transition.

...Fogarty, a 5-foot-8 center at Colgate from 1991-95, had a brief minor-league playing career before returning to his alma mater to start coaching. He later was an assistant coach at Clarkson and Bowling Green.

Fogarty had 51 goals and 140 points in four seasons with the Raiders.

Okay. Between the Tigers getting their doors blown off (again) tonight, and this....not one of my better nights.

Nothing lasts forever. The only constant is change.

This is a big loss for the program. In seven years Ron literally took nothing and built six conference champions, four NCAA tournament appearances, and a team that played for the national championship. That's quite an act to follow.

For those of us close to the program, it wasn't much of a secret that Ron wanted to move up to D-1. I don't blame him one bit. He's relatively young and wants to move on to bigger and better things. In the past two off-seasons he's interviewed with Alaska-Anchorage, Alabama-Huntsville, and LSSU. In my opinion, the Princeton job is a better job than those other three were at the time of those openings. Anchorage hadn't had a winning record in 20 years, Huntsville was just coming off of its deathbed, and LSSU still thinks it's 1995. While Princeton has had a few down years, they were last over .500 in 2010-11, and they were in the D-1 tourney in 2009.

I was caught flat-footed here. Although I knew this would happen sooner rather than later, I didn't see this move coming. As for Ron moving along, from a personal standpoint, I'm sorry to see him leave. I loved the guy and his family, and the atmosphere he brought to the program. But it would be completely selfish for myself and other Adrian supporters to not want him to succeed and move on with his career. This is a big upgrade for him. Period.

As for possible replacements, I've got nothing. I'm watching and waiting just like the rest of you. We'll see. Either way, whoever we choose has my support. I'm going to be here, ready to go when the boys come back late this summer. They need to be ready to go as well.

Yes. We just hired a new coach there, too.

Right now we're in wait-and-see mode.

Yes, I would think that Stavros Paskaris should get some consideration for the HC job.

That would be an incredible opportunity for a 29 year old young man.

Well, Enrico Blasi took over at Miami at 27. And Ron was in his mid 30's when he started to build this from scratch.

That'd be the quickest way to make sure Adrian never wins anything ever again.

According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, Adam Krug, past Adrian and semi pro player just accepted the assistant coaching position with the USHL Green Bay Gamblers after a two year stint with the USHL Indiana Ice. Too late for Adam to put his name in for this opportunity?

Not too late, but the obvious issue there would be squaring this with the Gamblers. Let's not burn bridges unnecessarily here.
