Believe me, I'm not a Tea-Party guy, but it kinda confounds me that The Aud can't take of itself considering that UC sells the place out 16 times a year, and considering all the rest of the events that happen there.

Looks like a bad business model to me.
It is the very fact that it "is actually in better-than-decent shape" that makes spending a couple million in renovations a little more prudent. Around 2006, Norwich spent about $5 million just to build a connector between Kreitzberg Arena to adjacent Andrews Hall (which houses many of the University's other athletic facilities). Yes, Norwich is a private entity, but as such doesn't enjoy the "economic multiplier effect" of public spending.

I assume UC also uses the Aud as their practice facility. Is this correct?

        They do.

FWIW, I'm rarely opposed to the ridiculous emphasis we Americans place on sports... But a quick drive around decrepit Utica makes this pork-barrel expenditure look criminally misplaced.

        Just my $0.02.

I grew up a mile away from Rolling Wheels. On a good night you could see the dust cloud from my driveway and the next morning, the car would be covered in clay dust. But man, those sprint cars FLY around that track.

Yes they do, but when you're sitting in the stands and can't see due to the dust are they really going that fast?
