Previews for tonight's two non-conference games: Canton at Conn College and USM at Bowdoin. Also, an article analyzing who benefits from the non-conference rivalries of the four D-3 Maine schools.

Well written article about the Maine rivalries. It looks like you did well in recruiting Mr. Pois, nescachockey!

Defensive breakdowns and a failure of offense to score goals seems to be the problem from my perspective.
In my opinion, Moorfield-Yee is still the best option. He has played well, despite the W-L record.

I totally agree, Jimmy D. I hate to see a first-year goaltender who is as good as Yee is, getting his confidence tried again and again by total lapses in his D-men. Building confidence is crucial but that is not being taken under consideration, in my opinion.

It was nice to see Bowdoin win convincingly tonight over USM. Last time they came off of a big road sweep, they 'escaped' UNE at home. Also to note: since giving up 6 to Wesleyan, Bowdoin has allowed 4 goals in 4 games against Trinity, Williams, Middlebury and Southern Maine. A lot of that falls on Messina and Fenkell who each posted 35+ save nights in road wins. The Polar Bears are usually up there in scoring, but the last two times they made it to the NCAAs they had a problem keeping the biscuit out of their own basket. I know they have 6 conference games and the NESCAC tourney to go, but they are on pace to get another crack at it this year. I hope this defense keeps up.

I sure hope so, although Williams isn't too far behind. If they sweep this weekend, the Ephs will only be 2 pts behind with 12 available points left. I've been watching the NESCAC long enough to know not to hand out regular season championships with 4 weeks left...

Agreed. Looking the Bears schedule going forward there are 2 possible threats when Amherst and Trinity come to Watson. Advantage Bowdoin at home in both cases and hosting the NESCAC finals weekend. The Lord Jeffs have big weekend coming up and if they can hold serve vs Wesleyan and Trinity respectively they can lock themselves into a 2nd or 3rd spot in the NESCAC standings when regular season play is complete. However, finishing vs Midd & Williams could be a problem. Don't see Williams taking 2nd as they have the more difficult schedule down the stretch and are likley to finish 3rd at best and probably 4th. Trinity is the sleeper team among the group who could vault into 3rd alone if they get the breaks and keep their solid play going.

I saw the Babson and Wentworth games over the holidays and agree Yee looked pretty good most of the time IMO. I haven't seen any other games but noticed that in five of the six losses Midd outshot the other team, and badly in the Trinity loss. Having said that, SOG can be a wildly misleading stat as to what actualy transpired in the game I realize.

They are, when the SOG are weak wristers from the blue line and the high circles.

                              bump,
It's looking like Amherst's Johnny Van Siclen may be the NESCAC player of the week. Two goals and an assist vs Wesleyan, and a goal in the first against Trinity with forty minutes left to play! He followed his initial shot in and put the rebound away.

edit: or on second thought... Maybe Benjamin Coulthard, a ton of saves on the weekend and an assist to boot!

How about Wesleyan? Can't deny that they can be a very dangerous team! I wouldn't want to draw them in the first round of the NESCAC playoffs!
