I don't know the answer to that, but based on the out of conference game results, NESCAC looks pretty good, anyway. In the first semester NESCAC went 15-7-1, with 5 of the 7 losses being by one goal! There were a few impressive wins (Midd 3, Platty 2; Trinity 3, Manhattanville1; Tufts 6, Curry 0), and some respectable one goal losses (Norwich 5, Midd 4; Utica 4, Amherst 3 )

There are some great out of conference contests coming up to start the second semester, as well. The premier event would have to be the Cardinal Classic with Amherst/Elmira, and Wesleyan/Plattsburgh. Middlebury has fielded some better teams for their classic this year also, hosting Manhattanville, Wentworth, and Babson.
You did quote me right... I think NESCAC is a really good league this year. It appears that Bowdoin and Milddlebury are good enough to compete for the national title -- and Amherst probably is too, though I haven't seen the Lord Jeffs play yet. That means three national caliber teams.

Bowdoin is a veteran team with tremendous depth at every position. I was also VERY impressed by Middllebury when I saw them play Bowdoin. They're young, but extremely skilled and fast.

Williams is a mystery to me. I was unimpressed when I saw them in Brunswick in mid-November, but they've been doing well. I don't think, however, that the Ephs have the same kind of depth as Bowdoin, Middlebury and Amherst. Depth (and goalltending) are key come playoff time.

And then there's Trinity, a program that seems to be on the upswing. Nice to see Coach Matt Greason do well. He's a good young coach, and, by all accounts, a fine person. And his grandfather (Roy) was the Dean of the College (and later President) when I attended Bowdoin!

Salem State @ Colby? The schedule on the USCHO site has the game for Jan. 2, but the one on the NESCAC site says 12/31. Anyone know which one is correct and why the disparity? Weather related..?

It never ceases to amaze me that the people who claim to know the most about coach Beaney don't even know how to spell the man's name...

Please forgive the spelling error. That of course negates the fact the Coach what's his name is a manipulative, prevaricating , opportunistic wanker that has jerked more than a few good hockey players and students in good standing around. "Never ceases to amaze me" ?? Then you my friend are easily amazed which does not speak well of your capacities.

There are very few hockey fans down there and the preponderance of fans will be at the basketball game leaving hockey to play in anonymity. That's the true difference between Amherst and either Bowdoin and Middlebury.
Absolutely true. The biggest issue with a new rink being built at Amherst is the administration, they simply don't want to have the money directed to athletics. Back in the early 2000's a donor wanted to build Amherst a rink on par w/ Midd and Bowdoin. I forget the amount of the donation they were talking about, but it was north of $15M, and the administration turned down the donation because it was directed to an arena and not being made to the school's general fund. After that fiasco the same donor attempted to at least spruce up Orr Rink by putting in stadium seating. The even constructed temporary stadium seating behind the net by the locker rooms for a few weeks as a test. Again, the administration quashed the directed donation. In fact, the President at the time was quoted as saying Amherst, "...has a tradition of bleachers," as a reason for rejecting the stadium seating idea. Certainly wouldn't hear something like that coming from the President of Midd or Bowdoin.

The new AD helps because the previous AD had a major hard on for the hockey program. He flat out hated the program and Arena. That's another part of the reason why they're getting surplus B and C TIPS slots. With the old AD the hockey program never got those surplus spots.

Many schools won't accept donations that are directed for particular purposes. In some case schools have gotten burned by someone providing funds for a new facility and then they discover that once the facility is built, they can't afford the upkeep. A school that I am familiar with (not Norwich) got burned when somebody built them a fieldhouse and they discovered that they were burdened with high utility costs for heating and cooling the building - something they had not planned on. Also, when directed funds are given, some schools feel that they can be donations that move the school in a direction different from the long term plans for the campus.

As for "a tradtion of bleacher seats," that does sound quite ridiculous...

You would be surprised. University "development" officers are not trained to take that into consideration. This was/is a school in midwest area where I taught many years ago. The school in question now requires that those kinds of gifts include sufficient endowment to pay operating costs of the facility.

Colby only had 4 shots vs Amherst, and 0 in the 3rd period. But they did hit a solid post in that period.

This has got to be some kind of a record. I had to double check the stats, after reading this in the recap...

On the plus-side, Sophomore Sam Parker was strong in goal for the Mules - has started the last four games and played extremely well in three of them. They should just stick with him the rest of the way and get him plenty of game experience to prep him for next year.

I've been following Colby for a while now and I suspect that they will turn things around now that they have a coach. Three head coaches in 3 years is just not a good situation for anyone and makes things difficult all around. I suspect once McDonald gets things going they will rebound and become a solid program again. I think there is some dissatisfaction with what has been going on in the athletic department among the alumni. 10 years ago they had good football, good hockey, solid basketball and success in other sports as well. Lately they have struggled everywhere. If McMicheal and McDonald don't deliver in football and hockey fairly quickly, expect the alumni to start pushing for change. Happened at Wesleyan, so it can happen anywhere.

Their power play is much improved, but 3 games this year already, they have coughed up late leads. That needs to be addressed. Another positive is the teams ability to play from behind, but come from behind hockey is generally losing hockey over the long term. With their scoring punch, they need to get out in front first and limit the gift wrapped goals they are giving up off rebounds and odd man rushes let teams back into games.
Does anyone know what's going on with the goalie situation at Middlebury? I thought the team would be set this year with BonDurant and Fullam. But then recently Beaney began starting the freshman Moorfield-Yee, and then more recently turning back to BonDurant occasionally, and now it seems totally unsettled. Are there injuries involved here?
