    Re: Elmira College Vs. Oswego

    My thoughts from the game:

-In the first the teams played pretty evenly, there was good physical play and a lot of time adjusting to the other team's game.

-Goaltending in the first was pretty good, Tuttle absolutely robbed Oswego on a 2 on 1 that I still can't believe he got across the crease and put his glove up to deflect. Beckwith had pretty poor rebound control in the first, if not for his defensemen staying at home to move the puck and bodies out of the crease.

-Oswego crowded the neutral zone in the second period, forcing Elmira to dump and chase more. Unfortunately for Elmira, Oswego's size advantage caused many of their offensive rushes to be easily put aside.

-In the second, Elmira's first shot was not until there was 8:26 left in the period. By this time Oswego had nine shots on the goal in the period.

-Elmira's defensemen were too aggressive throughout the whole game allowing many odd man rushes and leaving Tuttle out to dry consistently.

-Oswego's first line of Fox-Selleck-Laganiere is scary good. They're a big scoring threat and if Selleck can stay out of the penalty box, all three have the opportunity to put up huge numbers.

-Beckwith eased my fears of goaltending with his stellar second and third periods. The rebounds are a concern, but in the third he did a better job of limiting and controlling the rebounds.

-The freshmen for Oswego took some time to get going, but once they did, they were impressive. Singleton and Leimbrock are big bodies out on the ice and it was evident that even though they both look pretty lean, they aren't easily pushed off the puck.

-Elmira is going to have a lot of trouble this year if their defensemen can't get the puck out of the corners to the wings more consistently. They often had to throw the puck out of the zone because they took too long to go into the corners to dig the puck out.

-I thought for Elmira, three players stood out: Hoey, Kirby, and Willard. Hoey seems to have a nose for the puck and laid some good hits on the bigger Oswego players. Kirby was consistently the only defenseman to play smart hockey. Often he was the lone defenseman on the odd man rushes and the only defenseman to give Tuttle any help. Willard had Elmira's first goal and each time he was on the ice gave his teammates opportunities to carry the puck into the zone or slot for a shot.

-For Oswego, the freshman Rodrigues and Whitelaw are two players that are going to have a big impact for the Lakers, if not this year then next. Whitelaw has good vision and made some great passes that weren't capitalized on by his linemates. Rodrigues has a nose for the net and if not for two stellar saves by Tuttle, would have had a big game on the stat sheet.

-Finally, Oswego seems to be very good. Size, speed, a lot of skill, and hopefully consistent goaltending. To echo some thoughts from other posters, penalties are going to be this team's foil. A lot of the guys play with a physical edge to their games, but they need to control their bodies and sticks more effectively.

Last night's game has me extremely optimistic about this season.

      Re: Elmira College Vs. Oswego

Reading Coach Gosek's post game comments on Jaslow's article. He made it sound like Oswego capitalized on their chances and that was the difference in the game. He said all the bounces were going Oswego's way and none went Elmira's way.

Gosek is usually a very level headed and objective guy so that makes we wonder how much we really should read into the fact the score was 7-2.

Granted, as I have already said, I wasn't there but taking a look at Gosek's comments it seems the game was much closer than the score.

I'll get to see both teams duke it out again tonight and like i said in the friday game update thread, it will be interesting to see what type of adjustments each team makes.

Also, after looking at the box score, I noticed Brendan Sanders and Jack Day were out of the line-up for EC, I wonder what the deal is there. Sanders was the top frosh goal scorer last year and Day was a D-I transfer from Army. Maybe we'll see them tonight? Anyone know the story?

Well after watching that 3rd, either elmira's D was wore down or they've just got alot of issues to work out. The game was closer than the score, but I don't agree with the lakers win being "lucky" as the one post stated. I expect tonights game to be closer, but like our chances.

We're about three hours from puck drop and I still don't see the game listed on FastHockey.com.

            1) Beckwith looked very shakey in the first 2 periods. He gave up some really bad rebounds and looked confused out there. Elmira could have scored 3 additional goals in the first two periods but lady luck was with the Lakers in goal last night.
            2) The Lakers played a really soft third until the 3rd goal was scored. They looked tired and complacent with a one goal lead. There was no spirit in their play.
            3) Lastly it looked like they had troubles clearing their zone with even strength play. Which cost them Elmira's first goal.
To their credit they did have a really good power killing units last night.
Lets hope they come back from Elmira with a W.

I don't know what game you attended but it wasn't the one at the Campus Centre. Laker's dominated physically which took it's toll and we know what happened on the score board. It could easily have been 5-1 after the second and taken this game into double figures in the third. Very pleasing first outing for the Lakers.

No I won't be there as I just got back home from Oswego. Do you know if there is a webcast on Oswego or Elmira's part?

What's two more hours down the road for a game at your favorite D-III rink next to Romney

I have been hearing that Elmira will have the game on www.fasthockey.com.

If that fails, Elmira does have live stats you can follow from the athletics homepage.

If you want to hear an audiocast, I do believe WNYO will be making the trip down to the Domes so you can listen to the broadcast from www.wnyo.org

I quite like the Domes actually except for the crappy lighting. I hope to hear the game. Thanks

I can ask you the very same question. For the adult fans, not the student fans, were making the same type comments and I posted. You have your thoughts of what happened and I mine. Lets hope that another W is for the Lakers tonight.
