  • Mount Rushmore: Minnesota Duluth

Please vote for your 4 choices to be on Duluth's "Mount Rushmore." The poll will allow you to vote for more than 4 choices, but if you exceed 4 choices, your vote's weight will diminish by how many votes you cast (i.e. if you cast 5 votes, each vote will count as 80% (4/5) of its normal value). Also, there will be no concentration of a vote's weight (i.e. if you only vote for 1 your vote will count as 4 votes).

Further, if Duluth is the program that you follow and you want your vote to count for more than say a Sioux fan's vote, please register your program allegiance here...

The voting will remain open for 35 days.

Also, feel free to post "bios" of candidates if you wish.

If you vote for "Other" please post the name of the person you wish to vote for.

My final slot came down to Pavelich and Plante. Plante winning a NT as an asst coach put him over the top.

Sandelin would have been a good nominee. But this will be interesting to retry in 20 or 30 years after time has passed in our first national championship.

Hull obviously. The rest is tough. Kurvers had a long career and is still doing great things for for Tampa Bay. Mooch/Plante/Jack is tough because they are all such awesome guys. Went with Mooch and Jack, sorry DP.

Need to include Huffer Christiansen in the poll. He helped legitimize the program in their infancy and had more more to do with its history than Jim Johnson, for instance.

Also, if you're thinking Mount Rushmore makes it about founding father types, you need to consider Ralph Romano, who took a team that was beating up on the MIAC and helped get them to Division 1 status and eventually into the WCHA, which made all the rest of the history possible. Plus he's the one that hired an untested assistant coach named Mike Sertich when he was AD when it wasn't a real popular decision at the time. By the way, truth be told, I'm a little biased on this nomination but thought he should at least be considered.

We do need to include Huffer. I feel like I have not heard enough about his impact at UMD enough. And he is one of two people with their jersey retired.

I had to vote for Huffer Christensen as Other. Otherwise as a 4th I would have probably voted for Plante. Its amazing we have multiple Hobey winners left off this list, a nice problem to have!

Chico Resch? Nice NHL career but haven't really heard him being associated with UMD a lot. His stats at UMD were not stellar, although a lot of that probably was more due to being a bad product on the ice.

I realize that Sertich played a major role for bringing UMD to another level in the 80's, but no way in hell would I ever think of him or want him to be considered a symbol of UMD Hockey. Definitely not for the way things went the last 5-7 years of his tenure on ice and certainly not for the things that took place off it.

Maybe the low points that the 1990's brought have been forgotten by me. I feel like he helped establish UMD hockey to a level never seen before. This level was hard for him to match in the later stages of his career at UMD. When Sandy took over he knew what bar had to be surpassed and he raised it himself. I think he should strongly be included.

I went Hull, Connolly, Watson, Kurvers. Watson was a hell of a scorer, and his contributions as a volunteer coach can not be underestimated.
