For all the hullabaloo about the superior brand of hockey in the CCHA and the WCHA the ECAC and HE have five of the ten top current rankings, including number one. Do teams from a very small area of the northeast usually dominate college hockey rankings, or are referees and rules responsible for this situation?

ok I'll bite.... half the teams in the top 10 are in the WCHA and CCHA with 4 of those being in the WCHA. so to answer your questions, no and no.

            Re: breaking ranks

The WCHA and Hockey East are pretty much the best conferences in DI - so teams from that conference that are good are more likely to be ranked. Think like the SEC in football, you have a decent record and you get ranked by conference association. That said, that doesn't mean that the other confernces don't have good teams. Yale is having a terrific season so far. There aren't enough crossover games to say that the refs and rules are at play.

Also, the real thing is that reputation plays a part in the rankings. The USCHO polls, at the end of the day, are just for entertainment purposes only and will not be a factor come tournament time.

Well, the last 3 National Champions have come from a very small area in the Northeast. You do the math.

Yale at #1 .... let them have it. We know where they will end up at the end of the season. For those interested, their SOS is 31. That's not even a "mid-major" schedule. UNH has been playing a cupcake schedule so far as well. The "men" in this poll include UMD (SOS #4), BC (SOS #6), UND (SOS #1), DU (SOS #3) and Notre Dame (SOS #10). SOS isn't everything but the USCHO poll is fairly predictable every week. It's very much a two-pronged poll: (1) how many losses do you have and (2) how did you do on the weekend. I'd be curious if the flu bug hit UNO or if there was something else behind their sweep at the hands of Bemidji. Same for BU. We all know Yale plays in the powderpuff conference. Hand them BC's schedule and let's see how they do. Flame on.
