Just didn't click tonight. It happens from time to time.

I would like to see college hockey make two changes to the game to improve this
      1) Go to half shields only
      - with the full shields people are almost like human rockets at times and can just launch themselves at an opponent. If they took away the full shield it would force the player to play with a bit more self control

      2) Allow the same fighting rules as in the NHL
      - If players were allowed to police themselves to an extent then a lot of this diving crap that is becoming more and more common would stop happening because the other team could do something about it

oh ya and please WCHA call obstruction hooking for the love of god!
I agree with your points here about 1/2 shields and fighting rules...

      you know why?

because it would put Hakstol's bunch right the f back into their place where they belong. this goon chit didn't happen under Blais. IT JUST DIDN'T.

for perspective (and this is ad hoc off the top of my head right now, others I'm sure have more)

      Jesse Martin
      Jordy Murray
      Frankie Simonelli
      Brendan Smith
(add in bs like your goons dragging people out of the handshake line to fight in mpls) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQaZ3...eature=related

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj9Jb...eature=related

Smith has his head down and the Sue player just decides to lock and load anyway, just like Hextall, just like Malone

this isn't a one off accident each time.

it's the type of hockey that Hasktol teaches. dirty, cheap bs.

You can know this, UW doesn't have an enforcer this year and maybe the WCHA only has 1, 2, or 3 teams that do have enforcer types, but believe me this will snap back on the sioux at some point and I don't want to see any sioux fans *****ing about their player getting injured because his head was down and some player took a run and put him into the middle of next season

        ?

So what could they have done differently? Tell the refs that it's fine and they shouldn't call the penalty?

You guys are in so many of these illegal hit debates every year that I'd think you'd have better arguments by now.

I have no dogs in this fight, but how does Wisconsin only manage 5 shots on goal on their 10+ minutes of power play? IMHO Gleason's hit was clean, but Hextall got his elbow up and and made contact to the head and under the current rules that's grounds for an ejection.

As a Sioux fan, I get tired of the postgame discussion always centering around penalty calls. Whether other fans are accusing or we are complaining, it's just gotten to be that way a little too often. I was at the game and thought neither hit was with intent to injure but both were going to be called the way they were under the new enforcement policy. I don't think Hakstol teaches his boys to play dirty or try to injure, but if you are constantly playing a third of your games a man down, you are not going to be as successful as you should be. They need to play smarter, physically. Don't walk away from being physical, just be smart. How you teach your players to change those two hits, I don't know for sure, (except keep your elbows in all the way through a hit). But they have too many offensive weapons to be playing the box so much of the time. When nut cuttin' time comes in March, they better not be handing out PPs like candy.

I think someone else around here went head first into the boards one time too many.

                    Wisconsin really sucked last night.

Also, I think next year there should be a rules-emphasis on embellishment.

                      Wow!

For an inbred hillbilly, that was incredibly well said.

The discussion wouldn't center around these hits if there wasn't the predictable parade of Sioux fans lining up to say that they weren't penalties or the guy dove or the refs just don't know what they're doing. Own them and the situation would be diffused and the discussion would move on.

I agree with everything you said including that there's no reason to think that there was intent to injure. But those ARE penalties when you read the rulebook. I wouldn't have complained if the same calls had been made against us and I knew as soon as I saw them in real time that they'd be 5's. They passed the eye test in real time. Pretty obvious.

North Dakota can play however they want and you'll hear no complaints from me. But playing very aggressive and physical will eventually result in penalties, whether intentional or not. Don't complain on the back end when you get called for legit penalties. Kill them off and move on.

The only arguing I'll do is with the number of you who say stupid things like the guy who just got catapulted into the boards head first was embellishing it or that it wasn't a penalty in the first place. Like I said, play your style, but take your medicine when that style results in penalties.

The booing was uncalled for, but the crowd was pretty high-energy throughout the game.

Hats off to the Sioux - they were clearly the better team. Hopefully tonight will be the Badgers' turn.

I thought Hakstol's post game radio interview with Tim last night was interesting, and contrary to some of the thoughts espoused here. Tim was obviously upset with some of the calls or non-calls last night and was trying to get Hakstol to bite. Hak was asked about the officiating. I'm paraphrasing here, but his response was, the officials are not against us. They don't pick on us. There is no conspiracy. They just come to the rink and do their job. He has been stressing to the team that they can't get frustrated in the face of adversity that comes with a call that goes against you. Just meet the challenge and move on.

Then he was asked specifically about the 5 min majors. His first response was that his team needs to do a better job of recognizing those situations in which a hit is going to result in a major penalty and avoid them (i.e., don't check someone from behind into the boards or hit someone in the head.) Then he added this comment. He said that the officials have a very tough job. They see a hard hit, they see a player down on the ice with a serious injury, or what appears to be a serious injury, and they have no choice but to call that penalty, and the team needs to avoid getting into those situations.

Then he finished by saying that we will get killed tonight if we make similar mistakes. That he expects a much better performance from Wisconsin and repeated trips to the box or major penalties will make it very difficult to get any Saturday night momentum.

I think his comments were spot on. I will have no problem with a league suspension on the Hextall hit, although I don't think a similar suspension will come to Gleason.

I am also tired of complaints about officiating, from all parties.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

In addition to my whole awesome theory that opposing teams should just stay off the ice if UND is such a bunch of goons, I feel that UW should be punished for their horrible power play. I say if delivering flying elbows is a penalty, so should ineptitude on the PP. If WCHA officials keep letting the Badgers get away with it, nothing will change. But once again Greg Sheppard and his lackeys do nothing because it's not a point of emphasis this year.
