Rumor has it that Matheson is going MJ with the Shawinigan Cataractes (team that drafted him in QMJHL draft in June). The whole NCAA thing might have just been a farce since sources have pointed out he wasn't exactly thrilled with the teams he would have ended up playing for if he were picked 1st or 2nd.

Isn't it fascinating to watch the games these people play. I hope our guys didn't spend too much time on this kid. There are plenty of good players who appreciate the opportun ities that hockey has made available to them.

Weird considering not just 3 weeks ago there were a number of articles discussing his plans to go the NCAA route, maybe a year in the USHL. It wasn't like he was being recruited by lower tier schools, some top notch programs were interested in him.

Updates through the past weekend: Berkle and Juell are no longer on Heisenberg's website. Not much of a loss, neither really produced much this year. The rest of our recruits have been producing steadily or improving on earlier performances.

Finally, the NHL Midterm rankings were released, Northeastern recruits were well released:

          #27 - Oleksiak, Jamieson 8th ranked dman
          #59 - Ried, Adam
          #113 - Mike McKee
          #138 - Haar, Garrett
          #208 - Ryan Renz
          #209 - Gaudreau, John

Considering that Gaudreau is the leading goal scorer in the USHL and probably leads in drawing penalties from guys trying to catch him or at least slow him down, he would probably be ranked much higher if he were a bit higher (taller). At 5'6" 140 lb.. he isn't exactly a prototypical NHL early round draft pick, but may turn into a terrific college player for us.

Ryan Renz might have been rated higher except for the fact that he has sat out for the past month asking for a trade from Port Alberni. He finally got his wish at the trading deadline today and happily it's not in the WHL. He was traded to Prince George (somewhere close to the Arctic Circle) and then was immediately shipped to Vernon. It should be a terrific opportunity for Ryan.
Here's the link to the Vernon Vipers Blog, which is run by someone with a lot of time on his hands. Of course, the Vipers have given him plenty to write about as they've been the national champions for the past two years and are ranked 18th this year - so far.

Meanwhile, two recruits seemed to vanish from the list published by Heisenberg. Adam Reid, a 20 yr. old with Youngstown, whose stats made it appear that he was just "mailing it in" is missing as is Rasmus Juell of Cedar Rapids via Norway. In their place we added Justin Kovacs from Cedar Rapids who seems to be a live one. I can't really add any color about what is going on. Any thoughts?

              Re: Northeastern Recruits

              Just a couple of thoughts:

It would be really disappointing to see Reid not follow through on his commitment. Can't say I know all that much about Juell, but I thought he looked decent in the WJC.

It's a shame that John Gaudreau's size is seemingly such a huge factor. The guy seems to have quite a bit of talent.

You have to think that Clay Witt really screwed up his chances of getting drafted by coming to Northeastern this year. He was doing really well in Sioux Falls and could have really benefited from playing time there this year. I'd love to see him get some more playing time this year. This is the last year he's draft eligible, right?
              On Jamie Oleksiak:

Reid is still with us and plays in the USHL for the U-18 team. It was Adam Berkle fron Youngstown who is no longer going to be coming.

                  Re: Northeastern Recruits

Berkle and Juell weren't doing much this year, after he committed Juell produced absolutely nothing. Getting Kovacs in my opinion, is better, he's producing far more and looks like a better prospect. Plus it probably frees up some money if necessary to bring in Gaudreau early if he's deemed ready.

As for draft prospects, I'd expect Renz and Gaudreau to go up. Both are ranked in the 7th round (if that), Gaudreau I would be will go in the 4th or 5th round overall, being the top scorer despite the height disadvantage. Renz I'd bet will also go in a mid round assuming he picks up where he left off at Alberni. Vernon is doing better so helping them in the playoffs will help his rankings as well.

As for Witt, he was listed as a "C" prospect, so a possibility for a late round. If I had to guess I'd say he'll only be drafted if he gets another half dozen games and plays as well as he has.

                      Re: Northeastern Recruits

Updated, a number of our recruits have been playing quite well, Kovacs and Gaudreau are each averaging a point per game.

In addition, we have a commitment from Dylan McLaughlin, a sophomore in high school for 2013 or 2014. He's a left-shot Center, and a possibility for the National Team. Sounds like a good pick-up.

Additional Update: Gaudreau and Kovacs are continuing their great play in the USHL! Both have passed the 50 point plateau, are averaging more than a point a game, and have about 8 season games left before the play-offs. Gaudreau leads the league in goals at 34 while Kovacs is tied for 4th with 38 assists. These two appear to be the "finisher" and the "set-up" guys that can help next season...as discussed on other NU threads. Two great recruits.

Agreed Canada, fix up those two on the same line with a third veteran player, and you've got a very dangerous line. I've got to say, going into this year I was worried about next year's offensive production, but I think we'll do well next year, and our defense will be even better.

Hmmm, I think that's sort of up in the air. Quailer, McLaughlin, and Reid were all the most impressive all year. I think Quailer could have a better year than his freshman year (where he went 10-15-25), and score 10 or 15 goals at least. That top line of him, J Daniels, and Ferriero looked real good. I think Ferriero got his 10 goals if we keeps his game up like he did at the end of the season.

Reid proved himself to be a sniper, and I'm looking forward to seeing him continue.

Really it sort of depends if anyone hits a sophomore slump. I hope J. Daniels comes back and plays well, he got held up with his ankle injury the first half of the year, I hope by October he's back to his end of freshman year form.

Here's an updated list, Kovacs and Gaudreau have continued excellent seasons with both getting at least 1 ppg. Gillies has improved as the season has gone on, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing him play soon. Darcy looks like a great power forward who can drive on the net and score, and our upcoming defenseman are all highly touted.

Central Scouting has released top 10 lists of all sections, Ryan Renz and Oleksiak are in the top 10 in their respective sections (Canadian Juniors and US East respectively).
