There is general consensus that the USHL is the best league that the NCAA is allowed to recruit from. Behind that are the two far western Canadian leagues, the BCHL and the AJHL. Past that, there is a lot of disagreement. Historically, the OJHL would be next, but it has gotten quite watered down. I think that the CHL is now at least comparable. Count how may players of each league made the WJAC on a per-team basis. After that I would put the NAHL now which has probably passed the EJHL and the SJHL (Sask.) and MJHL (Manitoba). The AtlJHL is probably below those. Those are probably the only junior leagues that produce a significant number of recruits currently directly to colleges.

IMO, the USNTDP should be considered as an entity to itself, in a different plane.

I don't know if RB agrees with me....there are exceptions to every rule and It seems to me that the New Hampshire Monarch's of the ECHL put a ton of hockey players into the NCAA.

I don't know if Ralph will agree but I sure will. I have followed that team for years-they also have had a number of our local Jersey kids go up there and play.

He is talking over all. Many of the Monarchs, 2 most recent being Brown and Morgan, go there after getting deals and wanting to stay local.

No comparison to USHL and EJ. EJ is a joke compared to USHL as well as BCHL

Monarchs do the best job out of that league but still not close to USHL. USHL places about 245+/- kids a year, the vast majority of which are impact players. EJ is mostly fillers, if any.

Where the worst teams in USHL might place 14 +/- kids, sevEral EJ teams might ZERO KIDS and a few over several years. Valley Warriors for example.

After USHL it is BCHL and than big drop from there. EJ is not top 5. If your kid is playing vs a team with 17/18 players going to BU/RPI/Wisc types, he will develop. They get 75+ games and about 135 practices per season.

This is for example what Youngstown has done so far this year and they are considered worst org in league. Thats 10 high end schools so far, most teams will place 17+ per team.

I realize Coach Appert can sell ice to an eskimo, but is there a correlation between the quality of our seasons and where we find our players? From what I remember during the Fridgen years, we typically found the EJHL and CHL. With all of these western players, we have been doing amazing against the other conferences. Granted the ECAC is a different story, but that's another argument for another day...

Some coaches like to recruit in various leagues. SA has been getting some eastern players, like Curadi and Zalewski, who are playing out west.

Fridgen recruited Western Canada much more than Appert does. We lucked out in having a couple of local boys (Murley, Cavosie) sign with us, which kept the program alive for and running for several years when it otherwise could have take a big downward turn. As soon as they left, our top recruits were again coming nearly exclusively from Western Canada (see, e.g., Alford, Croxton, MacDonald, Lord, Basiuk, Graham, Butterwick, Farynuk).

IMO, the USNTDP should be considered as an entity to itself, in a different plane.

This analysis leaves out New England Prep hockey as well as Minnesota high school hockey, which are admittedly difficult to rate. Although the absolute number of players from each is not necessarily particularly high, each year some of the top recruits in the nation come from high schools (particularly Minnesota high schools). I personally thought/think it is a huge coup that Appert was able to pull Brutlag and Polacek from Minnesota high schools in his first year as head coach. Then again, each of those guys surely would have gotten more attention had they played Junior A for a year. RPI certainly went through some growing pains with each of them in their first year (or two) at RPI that would have been mitigated had they played a year of juniors. It is a catch-22, since had Appert asked them to play a year of juniors, they almost certainly would have gone to a much stronger program.
