He uses whatever's posted immediately before he makes his picks. So, when no one makes picks, he uses the 1F, 1D approach. When he waits til Thursday or whatever, he copies the format of the person immediately before him. I'm a bit caught up in the Watson phenomenon here at RPI, so here's what my algorithm thinks should be the picks. It says these picks should be good for 5.2335 points. It actually suggested Karpowich over Tremblay, but I don't want to bet against RPI for that result.

RPI: Helfrich
Clarkson: Tremblay
