Guess Coach still got what he wanted - first place at the end of December

Any thoughts on whether Jan should start tomorrow? As a non-league game, it might not be a bad idea to get him some game action in case something should happen to Shane. The other end of it is that if RIT can beat Merrimack, it would help them get into a position where they MIGHT be able to get an at-large if needed (boy does that tie to Lowell REALLY hurt there).

It's so long a long shot I don't think I'd bother taking it into consideration, especially since we know Jan can play.

Plus, Coach always treats these non-conference games as exhibitions, and I can't see that changing until we have a realistic shot at an at-large bid on a regular basis.

RIT only bought 100 seats in that section.

A win by RIT would likely make them a TUC as part of the top 25 RPI. To gain an at-large - RIT will likely need to get to about 14 or so. Winning most of the games would get them close I think.

I don't think Coach uses the non-conference games as exhibitions. In the first couple games, which are non-conference, I think he looks for line and defensive combinations that work. I don't think you will see him deviate much from what has been working the last few games.

My suggestion about playing Jan is more so that he doesn't get too rusty sitting on the bench. We learned he can play this year. A non-conference game might be a good way to get him into a game. If that's what you mean by using the games as exhibitions then he might.

Yeah, I agree I'd like to see Jan play. We know he's not a bad goalie, so that's not reason enough to keep him out, especially in a non-conference game.

The Post-Gazette was quite critical of RoMo's play at Consol, to the point where I wondered if they saw the same game I did. Interesting to see that phenomenon from the other side of the win-loss column for a change.

Rumor has it that Penguins coach Dan Bylsma (whom Coach Wilson once coached years ago) was quite impressed at the volume of the RIT cheering section versus that of the Colonials fans.

What are RIT fans thoughts of Merrimack who attended the game? Only fourth MC game I've missed all season. Looked like they outshot the Tigers badly. Any impressions on the Warriors and how they looked tonight from AHA fans? Always interested in others thoughts. If school had been in session, I would have made the trip, but with all the bowl games, I just could not justify going to a game up there 8 hours away with the atmosphere probably lacking what it is usually, which I heard is awesome.

RIT can play with anybody, but tonight Merrimack made the Tigers look like a DIII team again (very much reminded me of the first season at DI where RIT was outplayed pretty much every game). I was impressed with Merrimack and thought they played a very solid game and were about as good a team as I've seen RIT play (it even felt worse than the loss to Wisconsin in the FF last spring!). That said, i don't really think the Tigers showed up tonight ... as if the team had a serious New Year's Eve party last night! Altogether, RIT got their butts kicked tonight and I think it was a combination of a very good Merrimack team and a bit of a no-show by the Tigers.

Merrimack was bigger, faster, and better tonight. RIT could have done something about two out of three of those!

RIT looked like they were sleepwalking out there. Merrimack looked like they could contend in Hockey East.

Made my first ever visit to Ritter Arena tonight. You guy have something special there with the crowd and the Corner Crew. I will feature the rink on my website http://www.roamingtherinks.com/ within the next couple weeks.

One question for RIT fans- is there anywhere to buy a souvenir puck that will ship? If not does anyone have one they want to trade or even sell? I mostly have Minor Pro pucks that I could trade.

Great barn, great crowd, great fans, too bad on the loss tonight to Merrimack.

Well, RIT looked plain awful last night. No 2 ways about it. The team had a chance to take a HE opponent playing some good hockey and send a message. The message they sent was loud and clear: this isn't a particularly good team when you take them out of the worst conference in college hockey. We are clearly nothing more than a big fish in a small pond when it comes to Atlantic Hockey. Merrimack isn't even the creme de la creme of Hockey East and we got taken to the woodshed.

I'll question why you would start your #3 goalie for the game, when you come in riding some momentum for certain. Watson looked awfully uncomfortable and gave up a couple of just brutal goals and had it not been for Merrimack not being able to cash in a couple of rebounds, he could have given up 7 or 8 goals easily. Rebound control was a major issue for him and he seemed to be scrambling all night long. Granted he was under some pressure all night, but he never looked composed or comfortable at all. Even what should be routine saves looked akward.

All in all, a nice barometer of where the team stands right now and what needs to be improved if this team is to make any noise when it counts the most. I'll give the overall grade of the performance as a D+ for the evening, with the exception of McReynolds, who as almost always it seems, earns himself a grade of A, for his exceptional play prior to getting injured. He seemed to be the only Tiger who showed up for the full 60 minutes tonight, playing very well until his 1st period injury (with a goal and an excellent offensive chance immediately following), then coming back and playing his hard working, gritty brand of hockey after he returned for the 2nd. That dude never ceases to amaze with his determination and will to play the game all out.

RIT's bookstore sells souvenir pucks. I don't see them listed on their website, but you may be able to do a phone order. Their website is rit.bncollege.com and their phone number is 585-424-6766.

Merrimack just dominated. However, I think that starting Jan or Shane changes the game somewhat. I am not often critical of the team or coach, but starting Watson was just baffling. I could understand not starting Madolora to give him a game off and getting Ropponen a start in case he is needed in the second half. But Watson??? The reason I think that changes things is that they would have been better able to control the rebounds and slow the game down.

Merrimack was clearly quicker and faster - and I don't know if the team was able to adjust. And like I said, had RIT been able to slow the game down - particularly with Watson freezing the puck more - MAYBE they would have had a fighting chance.

I do agree that McReynolds was the RIT "player of the game" - even with his penalty. I thought Favot had an ok game. But really - this was a dissappointing effort last night when a win would have greatly increased the chances of getting an at-larrge from next to nil to slim but at least possible.

I'm not sure starting a different goalie would have made a difference. I thought Watson had a decent game to be honest. I'm not going to a fault the goalie when they are pumping in goals off cross crease passes on the power play. There is nothing wrong with popping a rebound out to the slot if its right to your player. I'll assume Watson did it on purpose but I guess we can debate that

Bottom line is when an opposing team comes into your barn and drops 50 shots on you its just a matter of time before the goals go in. I'm hoping this was a one off game though and I'll chalk it up to being new years day. We have all seen RIT play teams that are bigger and faster and hang with them. RIT was intimidated the entire night and players made bone headed decisions, or waited around for someone else to make the play. Bigos (#3) was doing a great job of getting under the players skin, by taunting the bench and the fans several times. A few players really showed up to the game but for the most part it was a team effort at losing. This was really the worst game I have seen RIT play since our first year at D1.
