But it is (conceivably) the business of any state legislature that, in part, funds one of the state universities involved.

None.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter.
It's all about grandstanding.
They get up there and pontificate about something that they have little to no real interest or influence on. Consequently, they impress a few of the half-wit sports fans that will then go and vote for them at the next election for no other reason.
