  • Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I just got an e-mail that Jesse is being airlifted to Denver today

He also may be able to return to school in January if his recovery keeps progressing like it is. Keep your fingers crossed and Jesse in your thoughts and prayers.

DU has lots of great locally owned neighborhood restaurants to pre & post game [Jordan's, Spanky's, Crimson & Gold, the Pioneer].

Magness is one of the few arenas in college sports that sells adult beverages.

Best place to watch the game is to stand in Section 18, but don't wear a non-DU WCHA Jersey or someone will kick the crap out of you and dump your decomposing body in the Alley behind Magness. Miami jerseys would be OK because of Blaisi. If you take your shirt off and fire up the crowd you'll fit right in and someone will probably buy you a beer.

The best bet is to take RTD light rail to the game. The light rail basically drops you at Magness, without the parking hassle, and you can drink without driving. Get off at the stop marked "University of Denver". Magness is at the base of the 215-foot tall gold leaf bell tower - you can't miss it.

If you do drive, the cheapest lot (108) is just east of the intersection of Buchtel Blvd and University Blvd. It's a five minute walk to Magness. If you can spend more money, there are closer DU parking garages on Asbury and York, and between Centennial Halls and Centennial Towers residence halls. Don't park on the streets, or you will get a ticket, and maybe even a tow. Not worth it.

At the game, you can get beer and cocktails in the concourses, and the chef-carved sandwiches in the North end of the concourse is the best arena food option, although pricey. There is also free pre-game food from the DU Grilling Society on most Saturday games at the south entrance to Magness, but it can run out early depending on demand. The students do a nice job with this.

Food wise, Crimson and Gold Tavern is closest to the arena at Asbury and University. If you want to meet the old DU hockey alums, the Campus Lounge is a must, owned by ex DU and NHLer Jim Wiste, but it's about a mile or so from the campus proper. I also like The Pioneer for street tacos. Jerusalem Restuarant for a post game lamb-shank, and if you are a hot dog person and want a Chicago style dog, Mustard's Last Stand on University is your destination.

Post game drinking wise, Jordan's for a decent post-game beer is easy as is Crimson and Gold. If you crave the undergraduate style sticky-and-smelly dive, The Border and the Stadium Inn will keep the cheap drinks coming and make anyone over 25 feel like a creepy old man.
