One thing that bothered me about Saturday was that I felt I was watching the Army game all over again where, sure we got a lot of shots, but there really weren't that many quality chances. We were back to our old issues of settling for outside shots and not really driving to the net (with the exception of Miele who was great again) or setting up in front. Now, I've been critical of this team when they're playing a team that packs it in, but we did a better job this weekend. Frankly, when we got the zone and set up 5-on-5, we were working it like a powerplay. That was impressive to see, but we weren't doing enough feet moving down low, nor looking backdoor or side to side. Settled for a lot of wristers from outside the circles without much traffic in front - we did miss Vaive in that regard on Saturday.

And, Wingels HAS to bury that chance in OT that Riley stopped out of pure luck. A better shot just toward the middle of the net goes in.
You make good points, and I brought up the whole feet moving thing after the Ferris weekend. They do a lot of gliding and standing around. Now on one side you can argue they have great patience with the puck but on the other hand they are easy to guard and don't creat their own chances.

As for the back door plays etc. that isn't their style. They like puck possesion and don't force the action, they like to move the puck around to create chances. Now I think they should try it from time to time and get creative, but we can't really expect it.

As for Wingles, you are right he probably should of burried it but regardless for me I just love the fact that when something needs to happen he is stepping up. He hasn't scored a lot but all of his goals have been big goals and that is a sign of a good captain.

Agreed on all. It's funny though because if you recall, Rico changed up the PP in the NCAA tournament last year as they became much more aggressive with sharper, crisper passes across the zone. However, those are certainly riskier plays, but it would be nice to see him switch it up a little more frequently than he does just to show some alternate looks. And, I know we're talking even strength vs. powerplay, but the idea's the same in terms of just being a little more energetic.

Your comments about being easier bodies to defend really resonated. That's kind of what I was seeing Saturday.

I'm not saying everything's broken by any means. Just some ways to generate a little more. The expectations are so high that a 1-0-3 streak isn't considered good enough I guess!

Yes, Wingels is really learning to take the team on his back if he can.

Now that you mention it he did, and I wonder if as the season progress if he will take the reigns off more. Seems like he is teaching the system more now and making sure they have it down before letting them expand a little.

And it's kind of the opposite from PP to even strength. On the PP you want to let the puck movement create seperation. But your right when you are even strength you need to move your feet, especially when you are gaining the zone. It really baffles me and you as well it seems lol

As for the 1-0-3 streak, it does seem like a dissapointment. But kind of feels like it shouldn't since they didn't lose a game and were upset! lol Comes with the territory though and kind of a nice problem to have.

Couple of those guys are cool though, but most are in for a rude awakening this weekend.
Perhaps you're the one taking it too seriously?

Of course UND could lose to Miami. They lost to UAA this season. Anything can happen, and Miami is obviously skilled. They aren't ranked #1 in the nation for nothing. This is hockey...anything can, and usually does, happen. No team is immune from a bad game or two. UND lost to UAA, Miami tied Western. If one of the teams doesn't show up on Saturday, it could turn into a blowout. But I highly doubt that will happen. I bet it will be a pretty competitive, close game.

Your "rude awakening" comment is an ignorant statement that is hypocritical to the rest of your comments though. You say that UND fans are ignorant when you say that they could lose, yet you say UND fans are in for a rude awakening...as if UND doesn't stand a chance against the mighty Miami juggernaut.

Good luck against the Beavers on Friday night though...oh yeah, that's right, you're going to blow them out too. I forgot.

Seriously though, I've seen one (or two?...I forget) Miami games on tv this year, and they are a fun team to watch. I was rooting for them in the title game last year. Too bad they couldn't pull it off in the end. It's always nice to see a fresh face on the national scene, and it certainly appears that Miami will be a team to be reckoned with for quite a few years to come.

Well you are one of those I was refering to as being cool.

And by a rude awakening there are a lot of your fellow fans who truly think this will be a blow out, that is what I meant by rude awakening.

I have no doubt this will be a close game, and what I posted earlier about everything is how I truly feel, im just not going to get sucked in by some of your fellow fans with the bs. I gave my props to UND and am realistic in who is good and what not. Me and you have some fun banter going but some people aren't quick enough to get it.

What UND fan would think they're going to blow out the #1 team in the nation? If that's TRULY the sentiment, then they are more arrogant that I could ever imagine. I just can't believe they would think that. That said, I can justify that if they're talking about the Buckeyes.

I agree it is pathetic, I was actually hoping to have good hockey conversation about the matchups...guess we will just have to do that here...

I think we match up well with UND, they are quick and grity but we can exploit their over agressive style IMO.

Should we stay disciplin we can get opportunities on the PP. I think they will have some trouble with our puck possesion. I hope the defense continues to play well, should they then UND will be limited in their chances and will get frustrated. When they do that they take dumb penalties.

As for Bemidji they are better than last year. They still have tremendous team speed, but unlike last year they move the puck much better. Both game will be another great test for this team.

Who gets the start each night? IMO , I dont think he changes anything.

Agreed. BSU appears much better than last year - and, didn't they get to the national semifinal meaning they were probably pretty good then?

I think you see Reichard both nights - or he reverses it and plays Knapp on Friday - but that might be strange. UND might be a game that overwhelms Connor. He has not played in nearly as many BIG games as Cody. Right now, my money's on Reichard both nights.

GREAT story on espn.com about Miami student hockey manager Brendan Burke (Brian Burke's son). Goes without saying how blessed we are to have Coach Blasi and the fine young men he chooses to bring to campus. Makes me proud to be a Miamian!

I could see one of two things happening in the UND/OSU game.
                            1. Close, competitive game.
                            2. UND takes it to them, taking out their frustrations after their DU weekend.

UND doesn't play over aggressive IMO. They are a quick transition team when they are playing well, which can lead to some odd man rushes and good chances. UND's dmen have been smart about pinching at the right times, and overall our defense/goaltending has been better than I anticipated entering the season.

We have three dmen that can really move the puck well in Genoway (status still unknown), Marto, and Gleason and provide offensive spark from the blueline. Blood and MacWilliam are monsters back there that will hit, and then hit some more. Both have shown that they can play good defensive hockey. Fienhage, another big kid, will play if Genoway can't.

For forwards...VandeVelde and Malone are true power forwards, Toews and Gregoire are snipers, Trupp and Kristo are both fast, skilled puckhandlers, and Zajac, Lammy, and Hextall are great at cycling the puck down low and creating opportunities from that.

It would have been awesome then if Miami still had Kevin Roeder running around back there to match hits. We don't have an overly physical D, but they are very big and mobile - particularly Schilling and Weber (that is, both big and mobile, not to say the smaller guys aren't mobile). Sounds like both teams can roll 3, 4 lines so I think Saturday should be exciting hockey. As of right now, I'll suggest a 3-2, 2-1 type game based on what I've seen from each team thus far this season. Will be a big win for whichever team comes out on top.

Miami will be riding a couple of streaks into Saturday's game, regardless of the outcome of Friday night's contest.

                              1. Unbeaten on the road at 6-0-2. Even if they should drop the Friday game against the Beavers, that would technically be a "neutral site" game though I'm certain the vast majority of Sioux fans will be cheering for their soon-to-be conference mates.

                              2. Miami has won six in a row vs. WCHA teams. The last team to defeat Miami from the W was North Dakota at the Lefty McFadden Invitational in Dayton in 2005.

Wish I could be there in person. Will be a good weekend of hockey.

For me how the goaltenders will be handles is the most interesting part about the weekend. UND is obviously a bigger game, but should you reverse it or play cody both nights you are killing connors confidence IMO. If you go with cody both nights, you go with cody the rest of the year IMO. You are right he hasn't played in as many big games but he did spend a couple weeks at the USA junior camp this fall so he has seen good competition.
