Right, that's what I was thinking, too. I think a couple are still slated for '11.

That's what I would expect too.

Yea I figured Mullin was an '11 with Gacek, but when in the video 'Rico said that was our "freshmen class", kinda makes you wonder. If that did happen, that'd be... 17 forwards on the team

Thats the way I took it, in the past he doesn't put you on the video unless you are coming in the next fall. Also You sign your national letter of intent the year you are coming in. In other words Cook would of signed two years ago, and Gacek would of signed this year if that's the case. When you sign you are slated to come the next season.

Which leads me to believe a Forward is leaving early and Coach knows that or their isnt a need to bring 5 forwards in next season....

Lol thanks, But I was never worried about cook. I just don't see a place for him to be honest. For me there are better players in his class and here, I don't see him cracking the line up. Just my opinion but he hasn't progressed since midgets enough for me to make him an impact player.

Ive been looking throught the NCAA's website and reading up on the NLI but I don't see why you would sign one if you aren't attending the following season. I know when I went through the process I didn't sign until I was going to enroll that fall.

                Will (MN)

What do you think is up with the Gophers? Seems like Don Lucia might be on his last few hinges here if they don't turn it around because you know how Minnesotans love their hockey!

                Charlie (MN)

Let's hypothetically say that Don Lucia gets fired or resigns...who could be potential candidates for the coaching job for the Gophers?

                Joe Gladziszewski (3:01 PM)

So Will puts Lucia on the hot seat and Charlie's already speculating on replacements ...

                Mike Eidelbes (3:01 PM)

Man, you Gopher fans aren't happy ... if I had a little slip of paper in my desk drawer with coach names on it, Enrico Blasi would be right up there. Gopher AD Joel Maturi knows him well from his time at Miami. Just sayin' ...

Ok so I read this on the INCH chat over at ESPN and first I have heard of it, but I didn't like it!

For me I don't think Rico would leave Miami, but he made a good point in regards to the AD. Is this something we should be worried about guys?

Maybe there just isn't room for a certain transfer from another Ohio/MAC school? He didn't produce much when he was at BG, and in 137 USHL games only produced 35 points. Also the only times a player leaves early are one of two issues typically 1) transfer due to problems with the program 2) go pro early.

We obviously don't have any problems from our point of view with the program, and unless its another Crawford-West kind of issue I can't see a player leaving for that reason. On the other hand we only have 7 drafted players, we could rule out C Mac and Reilly from the list since they're just freshmen, Vaive and Vogel haven't developed enough yet to be swept away by their franchises (the teams are getting free training leaving them in Oxford to build their games), and the other draftees are defencemen and Knapp.

With 5 forwards I don't think you see a defection due to those reasons, so if anything my money is on Tiesling not being a factor. Here's what the team looks like after this season...

                  Seniors - Forwards Wingles (1) Camper (2) Vaive (3) Miele (4) Cannone (5)
                  --------Defencemen LoVerde (1)

                  Juniors - Forwards Vogelhuber (6) Hirschfeld (7) Tiesling (8)
                  -------- Defencemen Weber (2) Schilling (3) Wideman (4) Tomassoni (5)

                  Sophomores - Forwards McKenzie (9) Smith (10) Mantha (11) Mason (12)
                  --------- Defencemen Hartman (6) Spinell (7) Kennedy (8)

So if we're bringing in 5 who gets sat each night?

As long as we can sustain success here in Oxford and start bringing in some trophies/banners I don't see why he'd want to leave his alma mater.

Great points. But, I think my head is going to explode. We should get Alex over at muhockeyblog to ask this question of Rico. He has a press pass and such this year.

That said, it's definitely something I've been considering. I think that's certainly a possibility, but my money's on Miami matching any monetary offer he would receive and leave it up to him. My two concerns are Minnesota and Denver. I don't think he'd leave for a conference rival like Michigan or OSU.

Very true, for me the only reason a coach would/should leave a job for another is to go somewhere where he can have a better chance of winning or going to his alma matter. But both of those things are present here, so while he has a good relationship with Minny's AD I don't see him leaving Miami. He wanted this job, he could of held out and stayed at Den for another job but he wanted this job and I don't think he would leave.

may be the case Tielsing may be the odd man out and Im ok with that, but if you bring Mullin in now he is going to play right away as will Wideman and Berschbach I would think. Tielsing isn't in the roster mix this year so you are loosing 3 guys that dress regularly and 4 total forwards. So were not going to go from 14 forwards this year to 16 next, even without tiesling you are at 15 and that is a lot to carry. Not considering tiesling you are still +1 on your roster from this year. This leads me to believe there might be someone jumping early and the guy I would pin point would be Tommy Wingles. 3rd round draft pick from a year ago and someone who has developed tremendously over his time here. To me he is the only guy that is not only ready but able to jump early. Canonne, Miele, and Camper are all undrafted and those who have rights just arent ready yet.

Something to think about and is very interesting to follow as the year goes on.

Wingels is a sixth round pick, I believe. I would be real surprised if he left early. Good student, captain, the degree is important (of course that was true for Martinez too). Mullin is a '92, so it would make a lot more sense to me if he was an '11, especially since he has not played any junior, he's not big, and given Miami's situation. But it's way too early to speculate about any of this, IMO. I am sure they have a plan and a lot can happen. Don't forget some guys need a little more time in junior (see Cook), so some plans change. I'm hoping Berschbach and Cook and Wideman have good years in Indy and come in ready to contribute, although more will be needed their sophomore year.

I see what your saying but Mullin signed his letter of intent so he will/should be here in the fall. From what I read on the NCAA website and my experience with the NLI process you don't sign until you plan on enrolling the next academic fall. Or else cook would of signed when he went to juniors and just played until he is ready and same with Murphy, as well as Gacek too since they are the same age. From my understanding that isn't how it works.

Thanks for the correction on Wingles I was going off memory and thought he was higher. I know education is important to these guys, but someone has to be the odd man out including Tiesling. To me it just leads me to believe someone is leaving early unless you redshirt someone but to my knowledge Rico has never done that. ( I could be wrong but I can't recall that happening)

This is something that will be interesting to watch later in the year. All we can do now is speculate, but we will find out once the season is over.
